So happy to be back to grooming after a 6 month hiatus from my back injury!

Thank you to my clients who have sent me many well wishes and thoughtful messages these last several months ❤️

Glad to see some familiar faces in Martinsburg this week at Greensburg Bed & Biscuit !!

I am still only able to groom small dogs for the time being and not currently able to fit any more clients in Martinsburg.
I am, however, accepting new clients in the Elkins area!

❤️ my senior clients will always hold a special place in my heart

This week was hard, not necessarily physically, but emotionally. I groomed quite a lot of senior pets this week.

That’s something many fail to realize about being a groomer; grooming isn’t just about clipping a cute haircut on a dog, it’s about fully assessing the dog in front of you and figuring out what each dog needs from you to be comfortable. If you can make the dog comfortable, a cute haircut is just a bonus.

My partner said to me after coming home emotionally drained yesterday, “maybe you shouldn’t groom seniors anymore if it’s this taxing on you.”
To which my response was, “I may be sad to see them age and in pain, but at least I know if I’m the one grooming them, they’re taken care of.”

So as your bouncy, bubbly dog begins to slow down, turn grey, and get up slower in the mornings, just know that when they’re in my care their aches and pains will be comforted, their needs will be honored, and most of all, they will be loved ❤️

It’s not always about making a dog look good, it’s about making them feel good 💕

Still to this day, Decker is crazy happy to visit with me and get his toes filed so nice and pretty 🥰

This here is Decker!

Decker was adopted by a lovely family almost 2 years ago. The first year of his life with them was extremely difficult for having his nails clipped.

They would take him to the vet to have his nails done often, since he's a Basset mix his foot structure makes his nails need trimming more frequently than some other breeds. At the vets office he got worse and worse for his nails and ended up needing muzzled and to have FOUR people hold him down. At that point the safest thing for them to do was to sedate him every 8 weeks and trim them back as far as they could.

In October of last year they had heard I offer grooming/nail trim training, they told me his story and there's no way I could refuse. He visited me every Saturday for his training and I won't lie, he was a challenge. There were tears on my end and from his owners. A couple of times I cried wondering if I was ever going to break through with him.

It wasn't until February of this year that we got his first nail trimmed. One nail! That was a win! No stress, no biting, no holding him down. We never pushed him past his limits, we let him know we respect his boundaries when he's too stressed. He built a solid foundation of trust. He now gets SO EXCITED to come see me that his owners have to hold him back from jumping out the car window when they're pulling in!

Decker now comes to stay the day with me every other Saturday for training and we finally had the biggest success imaginable!! We got all but one single nail trimmed! To some, having all but one nail trimmed on their dog may mean the groomer didn't "do their job" but to Decker, his family, Elizabeth at Greensburg Bed & Biscuit, and myself it was the biggest win we could've ever imagined!

Dogs thrive when relationships are built on trust. If you allow your dog to have a trusting, healthy relationship with their groomer, wonderful things will happen. Grooming shouldn't be a "just get it done" type of job, it should be a lifelong friendship between your dog and their groomer.

Even when breakthroughs take a year, the work is worth it for the dogs sake. 💕
