DID YOU KNOW?

Next week, October 18th through October 24th, is National Veterinary Technician Week!

It’s a time to recognize the veterinary technicians who work hard every day to keep our pets healthy, comfortable, and cared for. From assisting with surgeries and monitoring anesthesia to drawing blood, administering medications, comforting nervous patients, and educating pet parents, vet techs do SO much behind the scenes and at the bedside.

So take a moment next week to show some appreciation to your favorite veterinary technicians, both in and out of the clinic!
Whether it’s a kind message, a thank-you, a little treat, or simply acknowledging the hard work they do, it means more than you might realize.

A plain marshmallow can sometimes be a helpful pill pocket for dogs with food sensitivities! 🐾

Marshmallows are soft, easy to mold around a tablet or capsule, and some plain varieties contain fewer common protein ingredients than cheese, peanut butter, or traditional pill pockets.

Before using one:

🐾 Read the entire ingredient label every time
🐾 Never use sugar-free marshmallows or anything containing xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs
🐾 Check for ingredients your dog must avoid, including gelatin, corn, flavorings, and dyes
🐾 Use only a small piece, not a whole marshmallow
🐾 Ask your veterinarian whether the medication may be given with food or altered in any way

Because marshmallows are high in sugar, they should only be an occasional medication aid. They may not be appropriate for dogs with diabetes, pancreatitis, weight concerns, or certain dietary restrictions.

Always check with your veterinarian before trying a new food for a pet with diagnosed allergies or medical conditions!

Halloween can be exciting for us, but costumes, strangers, doorbells and loud noises can be stressful for our pets. Keep these safety tips in mind:

• Place nervous or easily frightened pets in a quiet, secure room before trick-or-treaters arrive.

• Keep pets away from frequently opened doors to prevent accidental escapes.

• Make sure collars, identification tags and microchip information are current.

• Pick up anxiety medications or prescription refills from your veterinarian ahead of time. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions, and consider giving a trial dose before Halloween if recommended.

• Keep candy out of reach, especially chocolate, raisins and anything containing xylitol. Candy wrappers can also cause choking or intestinal blockages.

• Keep candles, electrical cords and decorations away from curious paws and tails.

• Never force a pet to wear a costume. Make sure costumes fit comfortably and do not restrict breathing, movement, hearing or vision.

If you believe your pet has eaten something dangerous, contact your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital or a pet poison-control service right away.

A little preparation can help keep Halloween fun, calm and safe for the entire family!

Wellness is about more than treating illness. It means supporting your pet’s physical, emotional, and behavioral health throughout every stage of life.

A well-rounded wellness plan may include:

🐾 Regular veterinary examinations
🐾 Vaccinations and parasite prevention
🐾 Routine bloodwork and health screenings
🐾 Dental care
🐾 Balanced nutrition and weight management
🐾 Nail trims, grooming, and hygiene
🐾 Daily exercise and mental enrichment
🐾 Monitoring changes in appetite, thirst, behavior, mobility, and bathroom habits
🐾 Ongoing care for chronic medical conditions

Pets often hide pain and illness, so small changes can matter. Preventive care and early detection can help your veterinary team identify concerns before they become more serious.

The Planted RVT is here to support your veterinarian’s care plan from the comfort of your home. From medication administration and subcutaneous fluids to blood draws, glucose checks, nail trims, and ongoing medical support, we help make necessary care less stressful for pets and their people.

Let’s use this month as a reminder to schedule overdue appointments, review medications, check vaccine records, and take a closer look at our pets’ everyday well-being.

Rabies is a deadly but preventable viral disease that can affect any mammal, including people, dogs, and cats. Once symptoms appear, it is almost always fatal, making prevention incredibly important.

Protect your pets and your family by:

🐾 Keeping rabies vaccinations current, even for indoor-only pets
🐾 Preventing contact with bats and other wildlife
🐾 Never handling a wild or unfamiliar animal
🐾 Reporting unusual wildlife behavior to the appropriate local authorities
🐾 Contacting your veterinarian immediately if your pet is bitten or exposed

If a person may have been exposed, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and contact a healthcare provider or local health department immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Check your pets’ vaccine records today. If you are unsure whether they are current, contact your veterinarian.

Rabies prevention starts with awareness and vaccination.
