Essential Oils & Horses
MOODY MARES (AND BOYS, TOO)
A balance of normal hormone levels will influence a horse’s good health and emotional well-
being.
When a horse is moody, their behavior can be less than ideal, they are easily distracted,
and this can be very frustrating as a rider or owner. Essential Oils can help!
As we mentioned earlier, one of the most well-documented areas of aroma research is the
effect of smell on emotions and mood, and this includes easing anxiety with horses using
Lavender Essential Oil.
The receptors on the surface of the upper part of the nasal cavity and in the vomeronasal organ are directly linked to the brain – to the limbic system of the brain which governs emotions (we see these as behavior with horses), and to the endocrine system.
The hypothalamus works directly with the pituitary gland which secretes hormones that
regulate blood pressure, produce s*x hormones, affect thyroid function, memory, and a whole host of other things. Because of this direct link of the olfactory system with the brain, aroma can actually interact directly with the hypothalamus, thus influencing neurochemistry throughout the body which has some powerful outcomes!
Here are a few key Essential Oils you can use for this purpose:
CLARY SAGE is a calming oil that has a very strong effect on the hormonal systems and
helps to support normal hormone production.
LAVENDER has been researched extensively for its calming effects in stressful situations.
GERANIUM helps with emotional balance and support.
YLANG YLANG is calming, supports healthy blood pressure, and relaxes muscles. It helps
support emotional balance as well as the cardiovascular and hormonal systems.
ROMAN CHAMOMILE is highly relaxing, helps support emotional balance, and is soothing.
