Dr. O’Neal & Dr. Merz love bringing in their pups for a nice bath and a good deshedding every now and then! 🐶🐾
Welcome to Grooming 101! Once a week we will share some important grooming topics for your furry friends!
This week we are going to talk about the importance of deshedding.
Even if your pup may not need haircuts, a spa day can help remove excess fur and the shedding that comes with this time of year. Removing shed and dead undercoat not only helps keep your home clean, but also supports your dog’s comfort and health. Removing the dead coat keeps the skin clean, allowing air to flow over it and letting natural oils distribute properly, which helps prevent hot spots and skin irritation.
Smooth-coated, single-coated, and double-coated dogs require the most de-shedding, especially around the neck and back legs; however, they shed everywhere on their bodies from nose to toes.
In the grooming salon, we have an array of brushes and tools to brush through and card the coat. A bath with deep shampooing and conditioning begins loosening the coat, and brushing through while soap helps remove the loosened fur.
After the bath, a velocity dryer is used to remove water and blow out the coat into a fur storm! Once they are all dry, a good brush-out with brushes, combs, rakes, and carding tools finishes clearing the coat of all dead and shedding fur, leaving your puppy with a clean, soft, and refreshed coat.
Remember, grooming isn’t just about looking good. It’s an important part of keeping your pet happy, healthy, and comfortable! 🐾
