šŸ“¦ It’s finally happening…

Yesterday I ordered the very first proof copy of The Space Between Dogs.

After years of writing, revising, illustrating, learning new technology, collecting endorsements, and wondering if I’d ever reach this point…

A physical copy is now on its way to my doorstep!

Friday can’t come soon enough.

This isn’t the official launch copy yet. The proof allows me to review every page one final time before publication. But seeing those words — ā€œPROOF: The Space Between Dogsā€ — made everything feel very real.

Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me, followed along, shared kind words, reviewed chapters, and believed in this project.

We’re getting very close now.

Watching Drake do what he loves again has been one of the greatest gifts of his recovery. ā¤ļø

This week, he was back on a track—using his nose, dragging me to the start flag, working independently, and proudly alerting to a found article. Moments like these remind me just how far he has come since his TPLO surgery.

Tracking is one of my favorite activities for dogs, especially during rehabilitation. While it may look simple from the outside, it offers tremendous physical and mental benefits.

As a dog tracks, he moves at a controlled pace, shifting weight through his body, engaging his core, and strengthening muscles that support the hips, knees, and back. Unlike high-impact activities that involve jumping, twisting, or sudden acceleration, tracking encourages purposeful movement and endurance.

Just as importantly, tracking engages the mind.

Dogs were designed to use their noses. Following a scent trail requires concentration, problem-solving, persistence, and confidence. The act of searching can be deeply satisfying and naturally calming for many dogs.

For Drake, tracking is more than a sport. It is helping rebuild strength, confidence, and joy.

And for me? Seeing that focused expression, watching him work a scent trail, and celebrating a found article feels like getting a big piece of my boy back.

Thank you to everyone who has followed his recovery journey, offered prayers, encouragement, and positive energy along the way. Every step forward feels like a blessing.

Way to go, Drake. ā¤ļøšŸ¾

Drake’s test results are back… and both his urinalysis and CADET BRAF test came back NEGATIVE. ā¤ļø

That is very good news and I am incredibly relieved.

At the same time, I want to share why I became concerned in the first place—because dogs often communicate physical discomfort through behavior long before obvious medical symptoms appear.

The changes I noticed in Drake included:

• Increased irritability and restlessness
• Rushing about the house with elevated arousal
• Intense full-mouth gripping and biting down on toys
• Frequent urination
• Wincing while defecating
• Episodes of air hu***ng and difficulty settling

None of these behaviors automatically mean infection or cancer. In Drake’s case, they may point more toward inflammation, discomfort, prostatitis, GI discomfort, stress on the body from surgery recovery, or something more subtle that still requires monitoring.

But these behaviors were clues.

As dog guardians, it’s important that we do not dismiss sudden behavioral shifts as ā€œbad behavior,ā€ or dogs ā€œacting out.ā€ Behavior is often communication. A dog who suddenly becomes more reactive, restless, pushy, clingy, agitated, or unable to settle may be telling us that something physically does not feel right.

The negative BRAF test is encouraging, but it does not mean we stop paying attention. Drake’s kidney values remain slightly elevated, and we will continue monitoring him carefully moving forward.

For now though… I am grateful. ā¤ļøšŸ™

After everything Drake has been through recently—including the frightening sedation reaction during his TPLO recheck—I am thankful to have my boy home, and feeling himself.

Thank you all for the prayers, support, messages, and love you continue to send our way. It truly means more than you know!

Happy Mother’s Day! ā¤ļø

My heart is full today — filled by family love and so much gratitude while watching Drake move with strength and joy again.

At 9 weeks post-TPLO, I’m truly amazed by his progress and so thankful for how smoothly his recovery is going. Seeing him walk comfortably, regain confidence, and start enjoying life again feels like such a gift.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible team at Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care and to Dr. Bush for the skilled hands, compassionate care, and support that helped bring my boy back to me. ā¤ļø

Wishing all the moms — human and canine alike — a beautiful Mother’s Day filled with love, healing, and gratitude.

Update on Drake ā¤ļø

The past couple of days have been focused on helping Drake recover after his unusual reaction to sedation—the combination of heavy drugs, multiple reversal injections, intubation, and the overall stress on his system.

I’ve been supporting him closely, especially his gut, as his body works to process and clear everything it went through.

The sign I had been waiting for came about midnight on Friday. Drake lifted his head, looked at me, and gave me that look—the one that says, ā€œI’m back.ā€

What a relief I felt!!

I am beyond grateful that he is here, he is present, and he is recovering. 😊

Our next steps are a BRAF urine test to help determine whether we’re dealing with prostate cancer, along with a sterile urine sample to assess for prostatitis or a benign condition. Hoping for a sterile urine test without sedation. I will learn this today.

Thank you for the continued prayers, messages, and support. I truly feel them—and so does Drake. ā¤ļøšŸ™

Yesterday was meant to be a routine TPLO recheck for Drake… but it turned into something much more scary.

During sedation for his X-rays and a precautionary prostate ultrasound (because I had noticed he was urinating frequently), Drake had a serious reaction. His breathing slowed, his oxygen dropped, and we came very close to losing him.

Thankfully, an attentive technician recognized what was happening and gave him several reversal injections including IV support.

She saved his life.ā¤ļø

Sadly, the ultrasound revealed an enlarged prostate. Given his history of prostatitis, this could be an infection—but, since he is neutered, we are taking the next steps to rule out prostatic carcinoma.

It was an emotional day. I’m grateful to the veterinary team who acted quickly and to everyone who joins me in loving Drakeā¤ļø

I’m not jumping to conclusions—because the thought is too upsetting. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers, and I’ll share more when I learn more. šŸ™
