HART is a NO KILL shelter and adoption center for cats - a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation licensed by the State of Maine. We are a member of the American Humane Association, the American Partnership for Pets and the New England Federation of Humane Societies. HART is staffed mostly by volunteers who are dedicated to the well being of the shelter residents. We care for pets that would otherwise be out on the street, assuring their safety, health, and comfort. It was custom designed for cat sheltering and offers our residents an open environment, with climbing structures and lots of comfy beds. This environment allows the cats the freedom to play, nest, and hide, as well as form bonds with one another. All of our animals receive lots of love and attention, as well as expert veterinary care.

Sometimes, you don’t just find a best friend. You find your family.

Gooseberry and Firethorn arrived at HART in May after being rescued from an abandoned home. These 3-year-old, tabby sisters were frightened, undersocialized, and unsure of people. Our Shy Angels Socialization Team began working with them, slowly helping the girls learn that they were safe.

And then they met Yam.

Yam, now almost 5 years old, came to HART around Thanksgiving of 2025 as an undersocialized cat, and had been working with our Shy Angels Team to learn to trust people, too. When Gooseberry and Firethorn moved into Room 2 with him, we weren’t quite prepared for what happened next: they chose each other!

Gooseberry loves Yam. Yam loves Firethorn. Firethorn loves Gooseberry. And around and around it goes. Before long, the three were inseparable. You’ll find them curled up together in a sunny spot, playing side by side, or simply resting near one another. Gooseberry, who still isn’t quite ready for human touch, looks to Yam for reassurance. Firethorn is a little more independent and has started accepting gentle pets. And Yam? He seems to have found his purpose in making sure “his girls” are safe and loved.

There’s something incredibly special about watching three cats who were once so unsure of the world find this much comfort in one another. We want to make sure they never have to lose that, so Yam, Gooseberry, and Firethorn are officially a bonded trio, and they are looking for a home together.

We know adopting three cats is a big ask. But we also know there is someone out there who will look at this little family and think, “Those are my cats.”

Their dream home is pretty simple: quiet and peaceful, no dogs or resident children, patient humans who will let them continue building confidence at their own pace, plenty of treats, and a sunny window where the three of them can curl up together and watch the birds.

This is a face of experience. A face that says, “I’ve kinda been through it, you know? And I need you to respect that, OK?”

But it is also the face of a sweet, soulful cat who is open to new possibilities.

It has taken some time for 9-year-old Pun’kin to feel safe enough to let down his guard, but thanks to the gentle dedication of our Shy Angels Socialization Team, he has been making truly amazing strides. He surprises us every day with his bravery and growing confidence!

One thing that has always been certain? Pun’kin LOVES Churu treats. It’s the quickest way to win him over, and he’ll happily savor every last bit. He also enjoys being brushed, and will accept gentle pets from the people he has learned to trust. Those quiet bonding moments are incredibly special and hard-earned. He gets along with other cats, and when the shelter is quiet at night, we’ve seen his playful side come out—batting a ball, playfully tussling with one of his buddies, or chasing a toy mouse around the room when he thinks no one is watching.

Pun’kin needs an experienced, patient adopter who will give him the time and space he needs to settle into a new environment, as well as continue his renal support diet. Transitions can be overwhelming for him, and he’ll do best in a calm, adult-only home where he can adjust at his own pace. With continued love and the kind of thoughtful work we practice in the Shy Angels program, we truly believe Pun’kin will thrive — and may even become a loyal little sidekick. This sweet boy has come so far, and he’s ready for someone who sees his potential and is willing to continue the journey with him. Interested adopters will be required to meet with a Shy Angels team member for final adoption approval.

We’re open for adoptions this afternoon from 3:00 to 6:00pm, as well as Saturday 11:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday noon to 3:00 pm, and our Adoption Team is looking forward to helping you find your new feline bestie. We interrupt your regularly scheduled social media scrolling to bring you this very exciting bulletin: the adorable “teen” kittens are coming to the shelter THIS Saturday, 9/12/26!

With their baby cat cuteness, emerging personalities, heaps of playful energy, and solid basic life skills, kittens in the 4 to 5 month age group are the best of both worlds—young enough to be the adorable baby, old enough to settle into the household more easily. We have 5 older kittens ready to find their forever homes, and they will be making the journey from their foster homes on Saturday during our usual adoption hours, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, to do just that! Scheduled to appear are:

Jester, Male, 23 weeks old
Prank, Female, 23 weeks old
Riddler, Male, 23 weeks old
Sierra, Female, 18 weeks old
Salsa, Female, 18 weeks old

If you are interested in welcoming HART kittens into your home, you MUST first submit an adoption application, and then a member of our Kitten Team will review your application and contact you directly. Please note, we do not reserve kittens or process adoption inquiries via social media. We require that kittens be adopted in pairs unless you have an existing kitten or young cat at home, and for the health and safety of all of our cats and kittens, we adopt to indoor-only homes.

The final numbers have been tallied, and we are thrilled to share that an incredible $98,660 was raised during HART's 2026 Yard Sale !

Thanks to the tireless efforts of our hard-working Yard Sale Volunteers, local business volunteer teams, our generous donors, and enthusiastic shoppers, HART can continue to provide refuge, comfort, and comprehensive medical attention to the hundreds of vulnerable cats and kittens our shelter takes in each year. Extra special thanks go out to our amazing sponsors, IDEXX and Casella Waste Systems. We're also grateful to the Cumberland Farmers Club Cumberland County Fair for maintaining such a perfect space for the Yard Sale, Pine State Hauling and Junk Removal, and fellow mission-driven partner nonprofits, including Furniture Friends, who keep the virtuous cycle of donation going long after the Exhibition Hall doors close.

It is clear that, two decades on, the HART Yard Sale isn't just a fundraiser—it is a beloved community gathering. Friends flocked from across the state, and even out of state, to volunteer, shop, or do both. Cooks made meals for volunteers with care. Donors shared stories about the treasures they were contributing. Creative minds worked together to make shopping effortless and fun. And shoppers sure did shop!

You know what we haven’t done lately? Kept you all up to date on adoption stats. Let’s get on that!

We are so pleased to share that during the months of April, May, June, and July, a total of 127 felines were adopted, including 49 kittens, a number of bonded pairs, quite a few diabetic and special medical need cats, and several longterm residents. We’ve received some great updates from adopters, and we know these photos will make you smile as much as we are smiling!

Congratulations to all of these fabulous cats and their new families. And THANK YOU to our stellar Adoption Team volunteers for their many hours of work interacting with all of the cats, processing adoption applications, fielding questions, giving shelter tours, and connecting adopters with their new feline best friends.❤️

Sunday is the final day of HART’s Yard Sale at the Cumberland Fairgrounds!

Yes, we’ve sold a whole lot of stuff (thank you, shoppers!), but there are still many household basics and great treasures to be found. The advantage to coming to the yard sale on Sunday is that there will be EXTRA special deals and discounts!

Here’s the scoop: Items priced $39 or less are by donation, and items priced $40 or higher are 50% off. Pawesome!

** Please note, this promotion excludes jewelry, bake sale, and select vintage/ premium items. **

We’ll be open from 8:00am to noon, so head on over to the Cumberland Fairgrounds and help us wrap up Yard Sale 2026. And remember, every dollar raised helps support the care of the hundreds of cats HART rescues each year.
