Tuff is a 1.5 year old male neutered Pit Bull that presented to Smith Lake Veterinary Hospital on 2/24/26 for distended abdomen, not eating, and lethargy. Upon examination a prominent right sided heart murmur was detected on auscultation of the chest. Chest X-rays revealed a very enlarged heart with a fluid filled abdomen. After ruling out Heartworm disease, a congenital heart defect was suspected due to Tuff’s young age. Tuff was referred to Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine’s cardiology service where Tuff was diagnosed with severe pulmonary stenosis causing secondary right sided heart failure. Pulmonic stenosis is a birth defect characterized by the narrowing of the outflow tract that allows blood to flow from the heart to the lungs. Over time the heart has to work harder to pump blood through the malformation leading to heart failure. In order to correct this condition, Tuff underwent a balloon valvuloplasty, which is a specialized procedure where a balloon catheter is placed across the pulmonic valve and the ballon is then inflated to tear apart the valve leaflets, creating a larger opening and allowing blood to flow more easily from the heart to the lungs. Tuff has recovered well post-op and is back to living life to the fullest!
