𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸: 𝗥𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗲𝘀

Everyone knows of rabies, but do you really know what it is?
Rabies is one of the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹 viral diseases affecting both animals and humans. It is rare in vaccinated pets but remains a critical public health concern.

🐾 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗲𝘀?
Rabies is a virus that attacks the nervous system. It is most commonly spread through the bite of an infected animal, as the virus is present in saliva.

🐾 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿:
• Behavior changes (aggression or unusual friendliness)
• Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
• Difficulty swallowing
• Staggering or paralysis
• Seizures

🐾 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀:
Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. It can also be transmitted to humans, making prevention extremely important.

🐾 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴:
• Keep pets up to date on rabies vaccinations
• Avoid contact with wild or unknown animals
• Report bites or suspicious animal behavior
• Follow local vaccination laws

🐾 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀:
Rabies is completely preventable with proper vaccination and awareness, and healthy pets start with prevention.

We had a unique patient visit us this week.. a pig who traveled all the way from Fayette to be spayed by Dr. Smith!

We’re grateful her family trusted us with her care and made the trip for her procedure. Spaying is an important part of long-term health for many species, and we’re always glad to provide these services when needed.

She did well for her procedure and is recovering as expected. Safe travels back home! 🐷

𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸: 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘀

Diabetes is one of the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, endocrine disorders seen in pets. It affects how the body uses sugar and can impact overall health if not controlled.

🐾 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀?
Diabetes occurs when the body cannot properly produce or use insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. This leads to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.

🐾 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿:
• Increased thirst
• Increased urination
• Increased appetite
• Weight loss
• Lethargy
• Cloudy eyes (especially in dogs)

🐾 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁:
Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to serious complications, including infections, organ damage, and life-threatening conditions like diabetic ketoacidosis.

🐾 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴:
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Feed a consistent, balanced diet
• Keep regular feeding schedules
• Schedule routine wellness exams

🐾 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀:
With proper management, including insulin therapy and diet, many pets with diabetes live long, happy lives.

🐔 Blanche Update: She’s Back on Her Feet!

Remember our girl Blanche? She has come such a long way!

After suffering a broken leg, Blanche underwent surgery where a rod was placed to stabilize the fracture and allow it to heal properly. She’s spent the past several weeks resting, healing, and getting lots of extra love and care.

She has officially had her rods removed, and she’s taking her very first steps again! Seeing her stand and start to walk is the best kind of win!

She’s still a little wobbly (as expected!), but she’s making great progress and getting stronger every day. She’ll be back to ruling the coop in no time. 💙

We are so proud of this tough little lady!

🐾 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗲 🐾

This sweet girl is currently undergoing treatment for heartworms. Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes and affects the heart and lungs, but with proper treatment, dogs can recover and go on to live happy, healthy lives. ❤️

Treatment for heartworms is a process that requires time, patience, and lots of care. Dogs like Maggie receive a series of injections that work to kill the adult heartworms safely and requires strict rest to keep pets safe while their bodies heal. It takes time, but it gives dogs like Maggie a second chance!

The best way to fight heartworm disease is prevention. Monthly heartworm prevention is far safer, easier, and less expensive than treatment, and it can save lives.
