This baby was returned to me due to no fault of her own . Currently eight months and I’m that awkward stage . She is a pleasure to be around and is learning her obedience quickly and is crate trained. She’s very willing to learn . She gets along with other dogs and cats , as well as smaller children . She will have all of her basic obedience and puppy manners before going to her new home . Drop me a note if you wish to discuss her further .

A Labrador can carry a raw egg across a room and set it down without a crack. 🐥

It sounds like a party trick, but it points to something the breed was deliberately built for: a soft mouth. A good retriever had to bring back shot game without mangling it, so generations were chosen for gentle, controlled jaws and remarkable bite inhibition. The instinct to hold rather than bite runs deep.

You see echoes of it every day. The Lab that greets you with a shoe, a sock, or a single leaf carried like treasure is not being naughty. It is doing the very thing its ancestors were prized for, just without a job to point it at.

That gentleness is a big part of why the breed became such a trusted family dog and such a natural fit for service work. There is something disarming about a seventy pound dog holding something fragile as if it were made of glass.

There was a moment when the Labrador officially became the Labrador. 📜

For much of the 1800s these dogs were working retrievers with strong reputations but no formal identity. That changed as enthusiasts wrote the breed down. England's Kennel Club recognized the Labrador Retriever as a distinct breed in 1903, and the American Kennel Club followed in 1917, giving the dog a written standard describing the ideal build, coat, and temperament.

A standard sounds like paperwork, but it mattered a great deal. It turned a loose type of useful dog into a defined breed with a shared blueprint, which is a large part of why a Lab in one country looks so recognizably like a Lab in another.

Those early descriptions still echo in the dogs we live with, from the dense weatherproof coat to that famously steady temperament. It is oddly moving that the traits we love were once carefully set down on paper by people determined to preserve them.
