I talk a lot about taking the time it takes to help a horse understand what we are asking so that he can feel and move with confidence.
But let's take some time to talk about the human.

It's so easy to disregard ourselves.
We tend to not be very patient or empathetic,
We push ourselves to keep up with our peers, and kick ourselves when we have fear, or frustration.
We think that if we push ourselves we will get over those fears, but we often push ourselves in the wrong way.

We need to push ourselves to slow down, to understand, and to empathize.

That might look like:

-Practicing the small things that seem unimportant.

-Riding in a place that builds confidence and helps you understand and connect with your horse rather than react to your horse.

-Instead of focusing on "living" through a ride, focus on getting confident in the things that will make riding a success. Work on techniques that help your body relax. Work on your horse's stop, forward, and back up.
Understand what it takes from your horse to do those things, and how it can create confidence or demolish it.

-Only work on things that will help build your confidence. Don't push yourself to ride with friends if you know you will be tense and anxious throughout the whole ride.

When we work against ourselves we will never be truly confident. There will always be that fear or frustration lurking in the background ready to take over and consume us.

Can you be here?

Now?

In this moment?

When we are in the moment we can sculpt it into somthing beautiful. We can create trust, balance, and connection with our horses.

When we are in the moment we start guiding instead of reacting. We start giving our horses someone to follow instead of someone to fight.
When we are in the moment nothing is bad - just information we get to sculpt.

What are you doing when nobody is watching?

Do you say to yourself, "my teacher isn't watching, so it will be okay if I let my horse push on me a little bit, or let go of some boundaries?"

The thing is, it shouldn't be about your teacher, your friend, or anyone else. The important question is, do you really want this for your horse? For you?

When we look for a teacher, we are looking for someone that we trust, someone that will show us and teach us how to achieve our goals.

Raise your ✋️ if you have ever felt annoyed by your teacher because of how particular they wanted you to be with your horse. I will admit I've felt that way before. But what I later realized was that they are helping me achieve MY goals. They wouldn't make this stuff up just for the fun of it! (It was a pretty humbling moment)

If you truly want to meet your goals, you have to want it. You have to want it when nobody else is looking. Because when it comes down to it, all that really matters is how you are when around your horse... 100% of the time.

Facades

It's easy to create a facade. It gives us an illusion of safety, a way to protect our true selves, to fit in, and meet expectations. Before we know it, it becomes our identity and we start to base everything off of it.

In reality, it doesn't serve us the way we think it will and when we start to let go of a facade it can feel like the washing away of the dirt banks of a creek during a flash flood. At first the banks hold strong as the waters sweep away the grasses, plants, and debris of the banks.

But then the water demands more. It starts to move soil until it reshapes the banks. It cleans out old muck and exposes rock beds.

I have experienced lots of floods growing up. We had a creek that ran through the middle of the farm. It had twists and turns, shallow and deep areas, and fast and stagnant spots.

In the springs that we would get lots of rain, the creek would grow five times its size in a flash flood. It would get massive, it would roar, and it would sweep whole trees away.
It was a beautiful yet terrifying sight.

After the flood, everything looked fresh. The mud and ick were gone and replaced with limestone creek beds. The water sparkled and moved confidently through the areas that often stood more stagnant and scary.

My siblings and I loved exploring the creek after a flood. There was so much to see and explore now that the water ran clear and the banks were clean of debris.

Facades grow on us slowly as we watch what the world expects of us. Before we know it we find ourselves covered in the mucky ick and stagnant waters trying to impress the world and give it what it wants.

Unfortunately the things that matter won't grow from a facade… especially our relationships with horses. The harder we try to control and make a perfect picture the louder or quieter our horses will get. Louder because they can't stand the pressure that comes with unrealistic expectations, or quieter because they know it's no use to fight and need an internal place to go.

I was once told that keeping up a facade is overwhelming and exhausting. The ego gets hit harder when things “don't go right”. In fact nothing really goes right… because we have an unrealistic picture in our minds of how things need to go to keep up the look we are trying to portray.

It can be overwhelming to let the flood waters rush through our facade. It can feel like it's going to strip us away to nothing… but underneath sits our true selves made of rock beds that only get polished the more that it floods.

Finding ourselves through horses.

In this crazy world we live in we are so used to being fake and hiding how we really feel...and getting away with it.

We are used to mainly using words to communicate and because of that kinda forget about the rest of our body other then smiling here and there or gesturing with our hands.
A lot of times we keep things to ourselves for the fear of sounding stupid or someone not liking our opinion. Long story short we are good at faking.

But horses listen to the part of us that we hide.
Horses don't listen to our words. They listen to our heart and our soul. We can't hide from them
No matter how hard we try.

I think its part of the reason horses can be so challenging for us. They won't let us lie and even more importantly they won't let us lie to ourselves.
They force us to be true to ourselves.

They teach us that if you want something you have to ask clearly and have no doubts in yourself but at the same time have patience and consideration.

They teach us that you need to acknowledge your feelings and that your feelings are your responsibility.

They teach us that we need to accept our flaws so that we can correct them and move on with our life instead of accepting them and letting them control.

Horses can be so difficult to work with because when we work with horses they take our flaws and become them, and because of that they force us to acknowledge our flaws and change ourselves♥️

What makes a beautiful picture changes over time as we become more experienced and knowledgeable in horses.
What once used to be an amazing sight, now makes our eyes bleed.

The tack hanging in our barns that we were once so excited to buy for results now hangs in the corner. A dusty reminder of the things we aren't proud to admit but was needed for us to find the journey we are on now.

Our horses that we proudly taught to respond braced and ready for every command is now our reason for searching for something better.

Perfect manes and tails, manicured lawns, and beautiful stables now meaningless if the horses aren't truly happy and healthy.

Cliques and fads now replaced with a new deep desire of wholesome horsemanship.

What constitutes a beautiful picture is constantly evolving with our journeys.
If we get stuck on a picture we stop growing and helping the horses and people around us.

It's not so much about getting a horse to do a thing so we can reward him with a release of pressure... it's more about setting things up for the horse to feel their best with us whether we are in motion or at a standstill.
