Big news at Mystic Paws Academy! ✂️🐾

Private grooming is officially here, and we are so excited to welcome Samm, our new groomer, to the MPA family! 💜

Grooming with us is a little different. It's a luxury, one-on-one experience:

🐶 One pet in the room. Your dog or cat has the grooming room all to themselves for the whole appointment. No crowded tables, no barking neighbors, no waiting their turn.
⏳ Never rushed. We book fewer pets on purpose, so there's always time for breaks whenever your pet needs one.
💜 Gentle, force-free care. We are a training school first. Samm reads body language and works with your pet, not against them.

It's a great fit for nervous pups, seniors, first-timers, and any pet who finds a busy grooming shop overwhelming. Muzzle-trained dogs are welcome too, and yes, we groom cats! 🐱

Big news at Mystic Paws Academy! 🎉

I am now a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant, which means we have a behavior consultant on staff.

What's the difference between a trainer and a behavior consultant? A trainer teaches your dog what to do: sit, come, loose leash walking, manners and sports. A behavior consultant looks at why your dog does what they do, especially when fear, stress or frustration are behind it.

Here's what it means for you all:

🐾 Our staff: I mentor our trainers and class assistants, so every one of them learns to read body language, spot stress early and know when a dog needs a break.
🐾 Our classes: a dog who feels safe is a dog who can learn. We set up the room with space, visual barriers and sniff breaks, and adjust exercises so shy or easily excited dogs can succeed too.
🐾 Our advice: when you ask us a question, the answer looks at what your dog knows and how your dog feels.

Nothing about our approach is changing. We are still 100% force-free and still training through play.

We have just two Level 1 classes left to start this year, and spots are limited:

🌙 Monday, November 2 at 6:30 PM
8 Monday evenings, wrapping up December 21. Finish before the holidays!

☀️ Wednesday, November 4 at 2:00 PM
8 Wednesday afternoons, wrapping up January 13.

Level 1 is our beginner class for every dog, puppy and adult alike. Through force-free games your dog will love, you all will work on coming when called, walking together on leash, settling, and greeting people politely. Small groups, lots of fun, real results in the wild.

After these, our next Level 1 doesn't start until January, so grab your spot now. Level 1 is $200 and includes New Student Orientation before your first class.

Ever notice your dog seems extra wound up on the days you're running on empty? That's not a coincidence. It's co-regulation.

Dogs are social animals, and their nervous systems are built to tune in to ours. They read our breathing, the tension in our hands, the pace of our steps, and the pitch of our voice. When we're tight and braced, they get the message that something might be wrong. When we soften, they get a calm nervous system to borrow.

Researchers at Linköping University in Sweden even found that dogs' long-term stress levels, measured in their hair, mirror their owners' stress levels. Our dogs really do carry some of what we carry.

The good news? It works both ways. You can be your dog's anchor.

Try this on your next walk:
🐾 Breathe out slow. Make your exhale longer than your inhale. It tells your own body you're safe, and your dog notices the shift.
🐾 Soften the leash. A tight leash sends "brace yourself" straight down the line. Relax your hand, drop your shoulders, unlock your knees.
🐾 Lower your voice and slow your words. Fast and high pitched can rev up a worried dog. Low and slow helps them land.
🐾 Make space, then sniff. If something is too much, calmly turn and add distance together. Then let your dog sniff. Sniffing is one of the ways dogs settle themselves.
🐾 Settle together at home. Sit on the floor near your dog, breathe slowly, and offer slow, gentle strokes if they lean in for it. Pet, pause, and let them ask for more.

Co-regulation isn't about being perfectly calm all the time. It's about noticing when you're revved up and giving your dog something steady to lean on. Over time, dogs learn to find that calm on their own. That's self-regulation, and it's one of the best gifts you can give them.
