Recall can give your dog more freedom, but only when you’ve put in the work to make it reliable.

So we asked a simple question:

What is the one thing you would tell dog owners about recall?

What would you add?

A little work trip to Ridgeside K9 Headquarters

Got some reps in with the team, working everything from a young puppy to a BIG dog, focusing on neutrality, distractions, engagement, and making good decisions around other dogs.

One of the best parts of being part of Ridgeside K9 is getting around other trainers, working different dogs, sharing ideas, and continuing to sharpen the craft.

Different dogs. Different challenges. Same goal: better dogs and better handlers.

Always learning. Always training.

Today’s training location: Paris. 🇫🇷

Great smells. Lots of distractions. Fresh baguettes everywhere.

…Paris Baguette in Leesburg, Virginia, but the Jared doesn’t need to know that. 😂🥐🐕

Aura’s Turnover Day

This young girl has some BIG shoes to fill. ❤️

Aura’s next chapter is a special one. As she grows and progresses through her training, she’ll be preparing to eventually step into the role held by her big brother, Magnus, as a service dog.

Sadly, Magnus passed away today. His loss is heartbreaking, but the impact he made on his family will never be forgotten. Aura now has the opportunity to carry forward the love, purpose, and support he brought to their lives.

Before we worry about the big jobs, we build the foundation.

During this round of training, our focus was obedience, learning how to settle, controlling all that young-dog energy, and becoming an overall great member of the family. Those skills might not sound as exciting as service-dog tasks, but they’re what everything else will be built on.

In the very near future, Aura will continue progressing and begin learning the specialized jobs she’ll need to help her handler. There’s still plenty of work ahead, and I’m excited to watch this young dog grow into her role.

This one was also a little more special for me personally. Aura belongs to a friend from my college days, which gave me the opportunity to make the trip up to Quincy, Illinois, reconnect with an old friend, and help his family prepare Aura for such an important job.

From college friends to helping train the next generation of his service dogs, life has a funny way of bringing things full circle.

Great work, Aura. Your journey is just getting started. 🐕‍🦺❤️

And Magnus, thank you for the life of service and love you gave your family. You will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

If you’ve ever walked past the H-E-B shrimp boil, you KNOW the struggle. 🦐😂

Now imagine doing it with a nose 10,000x better than ours.

Good training isn’t about avoiding distractions, it’s about teaching your dog how to handle them.

Shrimp: 0 🦐
Impulse control: 1 🐕🏆

There’s enough room for all of us. 🐕

I’ve been in this exact same location before and felt the “trainer turf war” mentality, the cold shoulder, keeping your distance, acting like another trainer working nearby is somehow competition.

This time was completely different.

The crew from Top Dog Burleson saw me out working a dog, came over, introduced themselves, and instead of making it weird, they invited me to train alongside them.

So we trained dogs. We talked. We worked around each other. And everybody’s dogs got a little better because of it.

That’s what this industry should look like.

We don’t have to use the same methods. We don’t have to run our businesses the same way. We don’t even have to agree on everything.

But we can respect each other, learn from each other, and remember why we’re out here in the first place:

Helping dogs and helping the people on the other end of the leash.

There are plenty of dogs that need help. We don’t need trainer turf wars. 🤝

Going up the stairs is one thing… coming down is a whole different lesson.

A lot of dogs want to let gravity do the work, rush, skip steps, or launch themselves to the bottom.

We’re teaching the opposite: slow down, stay controlled, and think through each step.

Dog training isn’t always about the big behaviors. Sometimes it’s teaching them how to handle the little things safely and confidently.

The stairs are just where the training is happening.

The real work is teaching the dog to pay attention to the handler, matching pace, maintaining position, and staying under control as the environment changes.

Going up stairs? Slow down.
Changing direction? Adjust.
Handler stops? You stop.

These little moments are what turn obedience into something you can actually use in everyday life.

It’s not about the stairs. It’s about moving together.

The best training environments don’t always look like training environments.

For Jared, every new place is another opportunity to build confidence, neutrality, and the ability to stay connected to his handler while the world keeps moving around him.

That’s why we get out and do real things in real places. The goal isn’t for a service dog to only succeed when everything is predictable, it’s to prepare them to confidently accompany their handler wherever life takes them.

And if that happens to include spending the day surrounded by some pretty incredible cars… I’m not complaining.

Real world. Real distractions. Real training. 🐾

Taking your dog into public isn’t about showing everyone how perfect they are.

It’s about exposure.

New sounds. New smells. New people. New distractions. And sometimes… mistakes.

When it happens, don’t panic and don’t throw everything you’ve taught out the window. Go back to the foundation your dog already understands, help them reset, and keep moving.

Every imperfect trip is another opportunity to learn.

Exposure. Reset. Reps. Progress.
