Theileria orientalis Ikeda and Longhorn ticks

I took these pictures this afternoon. A heifer calf was found dead by a cattle producer, and they noticed the heifer was covered in ticks, hundreds and hundreds of them.

These are most likely Asian Longhorn ticks, this is an invasive tick species, that multiplies very quickly in great numbers. A female tick basically clones itself into about 2500 daughters.

This tick spreads a protozoa called Theileria orientalis Ikeda, which causes an infection of the red blood cells, and can cause a (severe) anemia.

A few weeks ago similar cases happened in East Tennessee (see link to Drovers article in comments).

While New World screwworm has not been detected in Tennessee, livestock and pet owners are encouraged to stay informed and inspect animals regularly.

New World screwworm can infest livestock, pets and wildlife. Knowing the signs and reporting suspected cases early are important to protecting animal health.

Check wounds and areas around the nose, ears, eyes, mouth and genitalia. Watch for drainage, discharge, bleeding, swelling, unusual odors or visible larvae.

Suspected cases should be reported within 24 hours to the Tennessee State Veterinarian’s Office at 615-837-5120 or [email protected]. After hours and on weekends, call 866-536-7593.

New World screwworm

First, there are NO cases of New World screwworm in Tennessee at this point.

All animal owners need to be aware of New World screwworm. It does affect both pets and livestock.
Monitor animals for wounds, any drainage / discharge, and if you see any maggots or larvae contact a veterinarian ASAP.

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture has issued temporary animal import requirements following a recent detection of New World screwworm in Texas.

There is currently no indication of an outbreak in Tennessee. This proactive order focuses on education, early detection and prevention to help protect animal health.

New World screwworm is a parasitic fly that can affect warm-blooded animals, especially through open wounds. Animal owners, producers, veterinarians and transporters are encouraged to monitor animals closely, especially wounds and areas around the nose, ears, eyes, mouth and genitalia.

Watch for drainage, discharge, bleeding, swelling, discomfort, lethargy, isolation or unusual odors.

Suspected cases must be reported to the Tennessee State Veterinarian’s Office within 24 hours at 615-837-5120 or [email protected].
