🐾 FIRST HUNTS, BEST MEMORIES! 🐾

One of the most exciting moments for any handler is taking a young dog on their very first hunt.

At Cross Creek Kennel, we provide the training and foundation to help set your dog up for success, but it’s time in the field that gives them the experience and confidence to become a true hunting partner.

For those first few hunts, remember — you’re hunting for your dog, not for yourself. Keep things simple and make every retrieve a positive experience.

✅ START SMALL. A quiet hunt with you and one buddy is much better than taking a young dog on a big group hunt. Too many guns, people, dogs, and birds can easily overwhelm them.

✅ LET SOMEONE ELSE DO THE SHOOTING. If possible, have a buddy shoot while you concentrate on handling your dog, helping them watch the birds, and making sure they are successful.

✅ START WITH EASY SINGLES. Give your dog a chance to clearly see birds fall from the sky and learn what is expected of them.

✅ MAKE EVERY SEND SUCCESSFUL. Especially in the beginning, every time you send your dog, you want them to come back with a bird. If they simply cannot find one, help them out. You can even take a bird from your bag and toss it for them so the retrieve ends successfully.

✅ HELP THEM UNDERSTAND WILD BIRDS. Wild birds can look and smell different from the pen-raised birds they may have seen during training. If your dog is unsure about picking one up, pick it up yourself, make it exciting, and toss it for them as a retrieve. Help them understand what they are looking for.

Most importantly, don’t be in a hurry. Those first few hunts are about building confidence, creating good habits, and letting your young dog figure out how all of their training applies in a real hunting situation.

Every first hunt is special, and we’d love to celebrate those moments with you! 🎉

If you have questions before taking your young dog hunting, feel free to reach out. We’re always happy to help you work through your individual situation and give you a few pointers before that first trip to the field.

We can’t wait to see your dogs in action! 🦆🐕💪

🐾 HAPPY FRIDAY FROM CROSS CREEK KENNEL! 🐾

I took a few snapshots while Matt was working some of our Intermediate and younger dogs this week.

The Intermediate dogs were learning bucket drills with the sh***un and working on combination marks with both land and water. The younger dogs were getting introduced to some easier land/water combinations and continuing to build their confidence in the field.

We also had a few dogs transitioning from mouth work back into field work. It’s always fun to watch everything start coming together as they move into the next stage of training. 🐕🦆

Stay cool, everyone! ☀️ Hunting season is right around the corner, and we’re definitely ready for these Texas temperatures to start dropping a little. 🍂

Have a great weekend!

🐾 4 WEEKS OLD & DOING GREAT! 🐾

The Blast MH QA2 × HRCH Patsy SH puppies are officially 4 weeks old, and they are getting cuter — and busier — every day!

They’re eating great, growing fast, starting to explore their surroundings, and developing their own little personalities. ❤️

We’re really excited about this litter and can’t wait to watch these puppies continue to develop over the next few weeks.

If you’re hoping to have a young hunting buddy ready to start enjoying next hunting season with you, the timing on these pups is just about perfect. They’ll be around a year old by then, giving you plenty of time to build a good foundation before heading to the field. 🦆🐕

Sorry my training posts haven’t been quite as weekly lately! 😅

Matt’s been out training at the crack of dawn, trying to get the dogs worked before the summer heat really kicks in. ☀️🐾

I was able to tag along this morning and snap a few pictures of some of the dogs in training. We’ve got a little bit of everything right now — tune-up dogs getting ready for another hunting season, along with some of the younger dogs getting ready for their very first season. 🦆

Lots of early mornings and lots of good work going on around here!

☀️ Happy Tuesday from Cross Creek Kennel! ☀️

Matt is officially on his summer schedule, which means many of our field dogs are getting their work done bright and early to beat the Texas heat. 🦆🐾

Meanwhile, as I'm enjoying my morning coffee ☕😆, I'm spending this week showing off some of our obedience dogs and the great progress they're making.

We want to send a huge thank you to the HRC Youth Program for inviting Cross Creek Kennel to be one of the pro trainers helping mentor these awesome kids and their dogs!

We always have such a great time working with the young handlers, whether they're learning with their own dogs or one of ours. Watching them gain confidence, improve their skills, and have fun along the way is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

The HRC Youth Program is truly a wonderful opportunity for kids to learn about dogs, teamwork, responsibility, and sportsmanship while making memories and friendships that can last a lifetime.

Thank you to everyone who works so hard to make this program possible, and thank you for letting us be a part of it. We had a blast and honored to be apart of it.
