🐾 Feeding With Intention

One of the things I talk about a lot is feeding with intention.

What that means is simply this: understanding why you’re giving your dog a particular food, treat, or ingredient instead of just grabbing something off the shelf.

When you're feeding fresh or raw foods, treats should follow the same philosophy as the rest of the meal.

That’s where the Lazy Dog Mom color system comes in.

Instead of random treats, everything is grouped by how it fits into a dog’s diet:

🟢 Green – Training Treats
Small, lean, and easy to use frequently without throwing off the balance of the diet.

🔵 Blue – Chews
Longer lasting items that provide mental enrichment and chewing satisfaction.

🔴 Red – Organ-Rich Treats
Nutrient-dense foods like liver that should be fed intentionally and in moderation.

The goal isn’t restriction — it’s simply helping dog owners understand how different foods fit into a structured feeding system.

When you know what role a food plays, it becomes much easier to build a balanced approach to feeding.

I’ll drop the shop and resource library in the comments for anyone who wants to explore the system a little more.

Pancreatitis in Dogs: The Basics
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, the organ that helps digest food and regulate blood sugar. When it becomes inflamed, digestive enzymes can activate too early and start irritating the pancreas itself.
Symptoms often include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. Some dogs recover quickly with treatment, while others may develop recurring episodes that require ongoing management.
One of the most common triggers is high fat intake, especially sudden changes in diet. Table scraps, fatty meats, and rich treats can put extra stress on the pancreas.
Because of this, many veterinarians recommend lower-fat, easily digestible diets during recovery. If your dog has had pancreatitis, any diet changes should be discussed with your vet to help prevent future flare-ups.
Pancreatitis can be scary, but with the right care and diet management, many dogs recover well and live normal, happy lives. 🐾

Micronutrients: Part 5 Vitamin E

If you’re feeding fresh and not thinking about Vitamin E…
You might be creating a gap.
Vitamin E isn’t optional in a fresh diet. It protects fats in the body from oxidation — especially if you’re adding omega-3s like sardines.
More fish without enough antioxidant support?
That’s imbalance.
And you won’t see the problem right away. That’s what makes it tricky.
I just published a breakdown on:
What Vitamin E actually does
When you need more
When you don’t
And how it fits into a structured fresh diet
If you’re serious about doing this right, read this one.

Did you know certain breeds are predisposed to specific health conditions?
As owners, we can’t change genetics — but we can support their bodies long-term through nutrition.
Are you aware of what your dog’s breed may be prone to?
Drop in the comments:
• Your dog’s name
• Their breed (or mix!)
• Conditions they’re predisposed to
• What foods you’re feeding to support them
And of course… pictures are always welcome. 🐾
I’ll go first in the comments.

For healthy dogs eating a properly balanced fresh diet,
calcium, phosphorus, trace minerals, and essential fats should already be covered.
So I’m curious —
what supplements are you adding, and what’s the goal behind them?

My vet told me the other day that I had “gotten lucky” my dogs don’t have heart disease since I don’t feed grains.

Lucky? No.
Intentional? Absolutely.

Here’s the thing:
❌ Grain doesn’t prevent DCM.
❌ Rice doesn’t magically protect a dog’s heart.
❌ The “grain-free causes DCM” panic came from studies on kibble diets overloaded with peas, lentils, and potatoes — NOT from fresh food diets.

What does matter?
✔️ High-quality animal protein.
✔️ Taurine-rich foods like heart, sardines, dark meat, and organ meats.
✔️ Balanced nutrition, not starch fillers.

So no, I’m not sprinkling rice in my dogs’ bowls like fairy dust to keep their hearts safe. I’m giving them what their bodies are designed to use — meat, bone, organ, and yes, plenty of heart.

👉 Feeding fresh isn’t luck. It’s choice.
It’s knowing that nutrients beat fillers every time.

Anyone have their own experiences with the vet where they push kibble? Let's discuss in the comments.

Micronutrients, Part 4: Zinc
Zinc doesn’t get hyped up.
But it should.
It plays a role in immune health, skin, coat, wound healing, even thyroid support.
When it’s low?
You’ll usually see it.
Flaky skin.
Dull coat.
Slow healing.
Recurring little issues that shouldn’t keep popping up.
Good zinc sources in raw diets: • Beef and lamb
• Organs
• Egg yolks
• Oysters (absolute heavy hitters)
Raw feeding isn’t just about hitting muscle meat numbers.
It’s about mineral balance.
Next up: Copper — because zinc and copper work together, not against each other.

I went to my local store this week and looked at the dog treat shelf.
One word kept jumping out at me:
“Gourmet.”
So I flipped the bag over.
Here’s the ingredient list:
Corn flour.
Wheat flour.
Soybean meal.
Sugar.
Then beef.
That’s not gourmet.
That’s grain and sugar with flavoring.

The front of the bag sells a story.
The back of the bag tells the truth.
Read labels.

Quick Challenge 👇🐶
Take a picture of the dog treats you’re using right now.
Flip the bag over.
Snap the ingredient list.
Post it in the comments.
If you want to go a step further — tell me why you chose that brand.
