We want to officially welcome Holly to our team! Many of you have likely been communicating with her as she works her magic in the background. She is our part-time Receptionist, and we’re extremely blessed to have her!

Holly’s Bio: Born and raised in Oregon, Holly first discovered her love for veterinary medicine while volunteering in the medical department at a local animal shelter. After working as a veterinary technician and assistant for about six years, she’s now happily working from home surrounded by all of her animals while helping Tiana and Dr. Furrer with reception work. She’s excited to continue doing what she loves and being part of the Barn & Home team!

TRANSPORT. We have been triaging (and seeing) a lot of emergencies recently. Due to high demand and not being able to teleport, there are many times we are recommending the owner transport their animal to a clinic (OSU Vet School for livestock, one of the Springfield ERs for dogs/cats). We understand it can be feasibly difficult, but PLEASE have a transport option ready and/or planned.

For cattle this is a truck and trailer - whether that is your own, or knowing you can borrow a friend’s. For sheep/goats/calves/pigs - this can be the backseat of your car, in a dog kennel in a car/truck, truck and trailer, etc. For dogs and cats - generally this is a vehicle, knowing cats can be put in a crate/box/trap and dogs can get in vehicles on their own or via a ramp.

We have heard of and seen people load calves in the back seat of pickups, goats in mini vans, chickens in cat carriers, cats in a cardboard box, and so much more. Feel free to get creative, but please have a plan before an emergency arises.

We know there are situations where it is truly not possible to transport an animal (down cow for example). But honestly there are very few exceptions. Emergencies never happen at ideal times, and we cannot guarantee we can get to you fast enough - therefore in case of a true emergency we urge you to have transport readily available for your animals, or at minimum a plan in place in case you need to transport.

Foxtails (aka grass seeds, cheat grass, etc.) are already terrible this year.

So far we have found them under eyelids of calves and goats, in between dog toes, and getting ready to cause issues in all sorts of other places and species.

Foxtails are extremely difficult to eradicate, so generally the best plan is to check each animal as thoroughly as possible every day. For any symptoms that might indicate irritation/foreign body/ angry areas - let us know!

Photos are of a calf with a piece of grass seed/foxtail caught under the eyelid - rubbing for even a day can cause significant damage and corneal ulceration.

Fun fact: If we stain an eye looking for an ulcer, we promise the animal is not radioactive - the stain is simply neon. And the tear duct connects to the nasal passage, so yes it will look like they're crying and snotting neon yellow/green!

Someone told us it’s June already! Which means next month is July - which is turning out to be a bit of an odd month for us, so we wanted to give everyone a heads up.

—July 4th is…on the 4th of July. This is a Saturday this year, so we are not taking any days off - but we may be extra busy before and after as a result of the fireworks and festivities!

—Dr. Furrer is taking vacation July 16th-19th. She will be fully unavailable! Tiana and Holly will still be available for general communication, but if you need medication refills or have non-urgent medical questions - please let us know before her vacation starts (advance notice required so we can accommodate)!

—We will be the vet clinic doing Lane County Fair check-ins for livestock on Tuesday July 21st - we again will be available for communication, but not seeing appointments. We also may be a bit slower to respond as our attention will be on the Fair animals.

—Dr. Furrer is on-call for the Lane County Fair from July 22nd-July 26th. We will be seeing our currently scheduled appointments on our regular appointment days, but may be slower to respond if we need to help with Fair animals. We can potentially see urgent appointments, so still let us know if you need anything - although as usual we never wish urgent/emergency situations on anyone!

With the mild winter we had, are parasites going to be really bad this year? Very likely!

Fleas, ticks, flies and lice tend to be the biggest external problems for most animals we see.

We emailed a Newsletter with more info, but the gist is to keep up the prevention for all species!

For dogs and cats:
---Keep them up to date on a flea and tick prevention.

For livestock:
---Fly prevention.
---Keep up on lice treatment. No great prevention, but thankfully numerous treatment options.

Everyone:
---Mosquitoes. Clean ALL water sources (troughs, water bowls, bird baths, etc.) regularly!
---Ticks. Sneakily spreading scary diseases. Prevention is key!

Overall – we hope not to 'bug' anyone, and that each of you is having a wonderful Spring!
