The first thing you should do when you find kittens may surprise you.

It’s kitten season and every year people find litters of kittens and immediately want to help.

That instinct comes from a good place.

But the first step is not always picking them up.

Mother cats often leave their kittens for several hours at a time while searching for food and water.

If the kittens appear clean, quiet, and reasonably healthy, there is a good chance mom is still caring for them.

Before intervening, ask yourself:

🐾 Are the kittens warm?

🐾 Are they sleeping quietly?

🐾 Do they appear clean and well-fed?

🐾 Can you observe from a distance for a period of time to see if mom returns?

One of the hardest lessons during kitten season is that not every litter needs rescuing.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is give mom the opportunity to come back.

Shelters and rescues are overwhelmed this time of year and resources are limited. That makes informed decisions more important than ever.

Helping is not always about acting quickly.

Sometimes helping means slowing down, gathering information and making sure intervention is truly needed.

Because the goal is not simply to save kittens.

The goal is to do what is best for the entire family.

🐾

Next we’ll talk about why finding homes is only one small piece of the rescue puzzle.

Cole: “Excuse me, but we’ve been waiting quite a while.”

Mickey: “A very long while.”

Meanwhile, Cole has is yawning from all the waiting.

The funny thing is, we’ve seen this story before.

A few years ago, two shelter cats named Sam and Dave found their family.

Their adopters recently shared an update with us.

One is social and follows his people everywhere. The other is independent and marches to the beat of his own drum.

Different personalities.
One unbreakable bond.

That is the magic of adopting a bonded pair.

Cole and Mickey are brothers. They’ve spent their lives side by side, sharing beds, meals, adventures, and the comfort of always having each other nearby.

While many people come looking for one cat, sometimes the best story begins with two.

So here they are. One patiently posing for the camera. The other trying to stay awake while waiting for his forever family to notice him.

We know their people are out there.

We just hope they don’t keep Cole and Mickey waiting much longer. ❤️

Part 4: Remember Sylvia?

The cat who spent her first days tucked safely beneath a blanket?

The cat who wasn’t quite sure what to make of shelter life?

Look at her now.

Every playful pounce, every curious look, every moment she chooses to come out and engage with the world is a reminder that shy cats are not broken cats. They are simply cats who need a little extra time to feel safe.

Sylvia has been showing us more and more of her personality each day. Beneath that quiet exterior is a cat who enjoys playtime, explores when she feels comfortable, and is learning that good things happen when she lets her guard down.

Watching her confidence grow has been one of our favorite parts of her journey.

Somewhere out there is the person who will see this side of Sylvia and understand that the best relationships are often the ones worth waiting for.

We think she’s ready to show them who she really is. ❤️

Plot twist: The shy girl has entered her playful era. ❤️🐾 and is getting closer to being ready for adoption.

🐾 A Cat Worth Knowing: Lady

If you’ve spent time around cats, you know they don’t all read from the same script.

Lady certainly doesn’t.

This beautiful calico keeps volunteers guessing. One minute she’s ready to play. The next she’s letting you know she’s had enough. Some people seem to win her trust quickly. Others take a little longer to earn their place in her world.

Lady wasn’t always this way. Since arriving at the shelter, she’s been figuring things out on her own timeline.

One thing she has taught us is that not every cat wants the same things. Lady doesn’t enjoy being picked up and would much rather keep all four paws on the ground. She likes having choices. She likes being listened to.

The more time spent with her, the more it becomes clear that Lady isn’t difficult.

She’s honest.

In a world where so many cats hide how they feel, there’s something refreshing about a cat who tells you exactly where you stand.

This is Lady.

A cat worth knowing.

If you are interested in meeting her, please complete our application and we will contact you for an appointment when she’s available.

🐾 🐈 Happy Tails Alert! 🐈‍⬛ 🐾

Meet Sam and Dave — a bonded pair who found their home in the fall of 2020 and have been bringing joy ever since.

Sam, the tuxedo, is the social one. He follows his people from room to room, greets them at the door, happily samples just about any food offered and spends every evening curled up on Dad’s lap.

Dave, the orange tabby, embraces his inner cat. He prefers the highest perch in the house, enjoys his quiet time, carefully evaluates every meal and keeps a close eye on the birds outside the window.

They may be complete opposites, but together they are a perfect match.

What we love most about stories like this is the reminder that bonded pairs aren’t just friends—they’re family.

Seeing Sam and Dave curled up together for their daily naps is proof that some cats are simply meant to stay side by side.

Thank you Connie Wepfer for giving these boys the life they deserve. ❤️

Thinking about adopting? Sometimes the best things really do come in pairs. 🐾🐾

Summer is right around the corner! ☀️ Are you ready to help cats stay cool? This is a perfect time to get a refresher on best practices.

To best help community cats in a heat wave, here are three key tips:

💧 Don’t leave food out for more than 30 minutes or it will heat up and/or bugs will infest it
💧 Too much water is better than not enough! Place water bowls in shaded areas and refill regularly
💧 Build or buy outdoor cat shelters they can hide away in. Tuck frozen water bottles under straw/other bedding inside the shelter to keep it cool

Some cats have resting grump face. 😾

Sometimes a cat looks serious. 😼

Sometimes a cat looks like they’re silently judging every decision you’ve ever made. 🙀

But a face doesn’t tell you who a cat is. 😽

😽 We’ve known cats with the sternest expressions who turned out to be complete sweethearts.

😽 We’ve known shy cats who became devoted companions.

😽 And we’ve known outgoing cats who immediately made themselves at home.

The truth is, cats are a lot like people.

🐈 A photograph captures a moment.

🐈 A personality takes time to discover.

This month, as we celebrate cat adoption, we encourage everyone to look beyond the photo and get to know the cat behind it.

You might be surprised by who steals your heart. ❤️🐾

ADOPT A CAT MONTH MYTH: 🙀

“I want a friendly cat, so I don’t want a shy one.”

We hear this all the time.

But here’s the thing…

A shy cat is not the same as an unfriendly cat.

Some cats walk into a new room and immediately act like they own the place.

Others take their time.

They watch.
They listen.
They figure out who they can trust.

When a shy cat finally chooses to sit next to you, ask for pets, or curl up nearby, it’s not because they suddenly became friendly.

It’s because they felt safe.

At the shelter, we often see cats at one of the most stressful times of their lives. The cat hiding under a blanket today may be the cat following you from room to room in a few weeks.

Don’t overlook a cat just because they’re taking their time.

Sometimes the quietest cats have the biggest hearts.

Have you ever had a shy cat blossom after adoption? We’d love to hear your story. ❤️🐾
