FrizzleBops Farm Hurricane Cleanup Crew!

Who needs to hire a professional leaf clearing service when you’ve got a team of highly motivated pigs working for snacks?

After the hurricane brought down a few trees, we decided to put some of the fallen branches to good use. Our four legged cleanup crew wasted absolutely NO time getting to work!

Payment? All you can eat leaves.

Efficiency? 10/10.

Employee complaints? Only when the buffet runs out!

Farm Fact: Pigs are natural foragers! In the wild, they spend much of their day exploring, rooting, and searching for food. Offering safe, edible branches and leaves encourages these natural behaviors and provides enrichment that keeps their curious minds busy!

Martha and Wade got a special treat today! Free rein of the apple orchard to munch on some grass and help us knock down a few weeds. Basically, lawn maintenance… FrizzleBops style.

Eventually I decided their orchard adventure was over. No chasing. No bribing. No elaborate plan.

I walked into their enclosure, gave the lead rope a little shake… and HERE THEY COME. 🫏💨

There’s something pretty awesome about watching two donkeys come running because they know exactly who’s calling them.

I’m not saying I’m officially the Donkey Whisperer…

But the security camera footage is making a pretty strong case.

Farm Fact: Donkeys are incredibly intelligent and have excellent memories. They can remember people, places, routines, and other donkeys they’ve known for years. Also other than dog’s they are my favorite animals!

Animal Spotlight: Mac! 🐐

Mac is a young, intact male goat who enjoys the finer things in life: snacks, headbutting his friends, getting into absolutely everything, and of course standing directly in the hay instead of simply eating it like a civilized gentleman.

He’s curious, confident, full of personality, and always seems to find a way to make us laugh. Mac firmly believes that if the hay is good enough to eat, it’s probably good enough to stand in too.

Farm Fact: Goats are natural browsers rather than grazers. They prefer sampling leaves, shrubs, weeds, and other vegetation, and they love climbing or standing on elevated objects to investigate their surroundings.

Look at this thing go! 🍋🍈🌳

Our grafted lemon, lime, and grapefruit tree is absolutely THRIVING! When we planted it, it was one of those “well, let’s see what happens” experiments… and apparently what happens is it decides to take off.

Three different kinds of citrus growing on one tree still feels like a little bit of garden magic. It’s putting out tons of healthy new growth, and I cannot wait for the day we’re walking outside and picking lemons, limes, AND grapefruit off the same tree.

Just another little piece of FrizzleBops Farm coming to life.

Farm Fact: Grafting lets growers join different citrus varieties onto the same rootstock, meaning one tree can actually produce multiple kinds of fruit! Each grafted branch keeps the characteristics of the variety it came from.

It takes a village… or apparently a whole herd of pigs.

Wink and Layla have officially started halter training with Siri as we work on getting these two little cuties ready for the FrizzleBops petting zoo!

They’re learning how to walk nicely, follow along, and get comfortable being handled and luckily, some of the older pigs have decided to join the training team. Nothing like having a few experienced piggy friends around to show the babies how it’s done.

Wink and Layla are doing such a great job already, and watching their little personalities come out during training might be our favorite part.

Farm Fact: Pigs are incredibly intelligent and can learn routines, recognize cues, and be trained using positive reinforcement very similar to dogs!

When you tell the donkeys it’s time to leave the orchard… apparently that means FULL SPEED HOME.

Martha and Wade got some extra time grazing in the apple orchard today, and when I told them it was time to head back to their pasture, there was absolutely no hesitation. They booked it straight for the door like they’d been waiting for the starting gun!

I’m so proud of how well behaved these two are for me. Being able to give them access to different areas of the farm and simply call them back when it’s time to go makes life so much easier. Watching how excited they get certainly doesn’t hurt either.

Farm Fact: Donkeys are incredibly intelligent and have excellent memories. With consistent handling and positive experiences, they can learn routines, recognize cues, and remember people and places for years.

The live roof experiment is doing exactly what we hoped! 🌱🐐

After the rain, the top is looking lush and green while the ground underneath stayed nice and dry. The idea is pretty simple: instead of a traditional roof, we’re creating a living layer of grass and plants that provides shelter below while turning otherwise wasted roof space into something useful—and honestly, it looks pretty cool too.

Mac volunteered for today’s quality-control inspection and seems satisfied with the results. 😂

We’re still experimenting and learning as we go, but seeing dry bedding underneath after a good rain is a pretty exciting proof of concept!

Farm Fact: Living or “green” roofs can help absorb rainfall, provide insulation, reduce runoff, and create additional habitat for plants and insects.

Wade and Martha got a little special treat today!

We opened up the gate from their pasture into the apple orchard and let them spend some time exploring and helping themselves to all the grass and weeds they could find.

Needless to say, they were VERY excited about their new dining options. 😂 But they were also incredibly well-behaved, stayed right where they were supposed to, and did such a good job exploring their new space.

A couple of happy donkeys, full bellies, and fewer weeds in the orchard. We’ll call that a win for everybody!

Farm Fact: Donkeys are natural browsers as well as grazers, which means they enjoy eating more than just grass. Given the opportunity, they’ll happily investigate a variety of safe plants, weeds, leaves, and other vegetation.
