PERSONAL OPINION ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BREEDER AND A DOG SELLER
❤️ BREEDER:
✔️ Cares about animal welfare.
✔️ Uses genetic selection to help prevent hereditary diseases.
✔️ Carefully evaluates both sire and dam, carrying out as many tests as possible (within their means), both in working ability and conformation/show quality (we know the financial sacrifice and personal time this requires).
✔️ Raises dogs in a family environment, something I have always admired in the German breeders I know.
✔️ Has deep knowledge of the breed, focusing on the instincts and abilities each breed should develop to perform its intended work.
✔️ Provides clean housing, proper nutrition, and all the care their dogs need.
✔️ Carefully selects who receives their puppies—not everyone interested is suitable—always considering which family will provide the best life for the puppy and allow it to do what it enjoys most (depending on the breed).
✔️ Places puppies with their proper vaccinations, deworming, microchip, pedigree registration (LOE), etc.
💰🫰 DOG SELLER:
✔️ Doesn’t care about the sire or dam.
✔️ Does not work or prove any of their own dogs; they rely only on the achievements of grandparents, great-grandparents, or great-great-grandparents, presenting those accomplishments as if they were their own. They invest neither time nor money in having their dogs evaluated by judges or independent experts.
✔️ Poor facilities—or facilities designed solely for producing puppies—with excessive numbers of females and constant litters.
✔️ They do not truly enjoy their dogs: they don’t walk them, train them, spoil them, play with them, or travel with them. They simply select a random puppy as a future breeding female.
✔️ They keep a large number of dogs whose only purpose is breeding—nothing more.
🫣 JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION:
Breeding is very difficult, and things do not always turn out the way you hope, even when you give it your all. I have always admired family-based breeding, as I learned from many breeder friends—especially Serbian, Spanish & German breeders. My goal with each litter is to keep one puppy and continue developing both working ability on the field and beauty/show quality (IT IS OUR PASSION).
Having more a couple litters a year, in my view, does not make someone a breeder—it simply makes them a dog seller. Again, this is just my personal opinion.
