Let’s talk about the FALL DE-SHED!!

A fall de-shed helps dogs transition from a lighter summer coat to a thick, insulating winter undercoat while keeping their skin healthy and your home fur-free!

The process:
• Undercoat Removal: It pulls out trapped, dead undercoat hair that standard home brushes miss.
• Temperature Regulation: Clearing out old fur allows air to circulate properly against the skin.
• Mat Prevention: Removing loose clumps stops hair from tangling into painful mats.
• Skin Health: It helps distribute natural skin oils and lowers the risk of hot spots or moisture buildup.
• Early Detection: Regular grooming sessions let you spot skin irritations, ticks, or unusual bumps early.

Benefits for Your Home:
• Less Fur Around the House: It drastically cuts down the amount of hair ending up on your furniture, rugs, and clothes.
• Reduced Allergens: Getting rid of loose fur also helps decrease floating dander in indoor spaces.

Best Practices for Autumn Coat Care

• Match the Tool to the Coat: if doing grooming at home, use long slicker brushes or undercoat rakes for double-coated breeds (like Golden Retrievers and Huskies) and softer bristle brushes for short-haired breeds!
• Incorporate Proper Bathing: A good bath and thorough conditioning help loosen dead hair so it slides out more easily.
• Dry Thoroughly: Always dry damp fur completely after baths or rainy fall walks to prevent moisture-related skin issues.

Happy Fall!

Do you know how dogs sweat?

Dogs do sweat, but only through the pads of their paws using specialized cooling glands, while their other sweat glands release scent signals instead.

Because paw sweating is not enough to lower their temperature, dogs rely heavily on panting and widening their blood vessels to stay cool. There are two types of sweat Glands. The first are called Merocrine Glands, located on the paw pads. These act like human sweat glands to produce moisture that helps cool the dog down. The second is the Apocrine Glands. These are found all over the body, but these DO NOT cool the dog; they release personal scent markers and pheromones for communication.

Dogs cool down also by panting. Panting rapidly moves air over the wet surfaces of the tongue and lungs to evaporate heat. This causes something called Vasodilation. This is when panting widens blood vessels near the skin (especially on the face and ears) so hot blood can cool off before going back to the heart.

This is why it is not recommended to shave double-coated breeds, even in hot weather. To help your pup stay cool, provide a shallow flat dish or pool with water that they can dip their paws into while hot. Also provide adequate cool (not cold) water for drinking at normal intervals throughout the day. Providing shade is also recommended for those extremely hot days!

SUMMER COAT CARE PSA

BRUSHING & DE-MATTING:

Choose the right tool: Long-haired dogs need a longer pronged metal grooming comb, followed by a pin or slicker brush, while short, smooth coats do best with rubber curry combs.

Always comb/brush down to the skin to stimulate blood circulation, but be gentle to avoid "brush burn".

Tackle mats safely: Never pull forcefully on tangles. Apply a dog-safe detangling spray to stubborn knots and gently work through them layer by layer using a slicker brush and a steel comb.

Focus areas: Mats frequently form in high-friction areas, like behind the ears, under the armpits, and on the inner thighs.

BATHING: Always brush your dog before bathing to remove dead hair and prevent mats from tightening. NEVER USE human products. Always use pet specific shampoo and conditioner as they are formulated for your pets skin and hair coat.

Happy summer to you and your fur babies!

Many people ask how often they should have their pet groomed. And honestly, it depends on the pet! 🐕 🐈

Not all grooming needs to happen at a grooming salon. Home maintenance and a consistent grooming schedule is both recommended and necessary. 🗓️🪮

Consistency is key in grooming… and your groomer will thank you for it! ✂️❤️

Regular grooming isn’t just about keeping pets looking smart – it’s essential for their health, comfort and wellbeing 🐶💚

From maintaining a clean, fresh coat to spotting potential health concerns early 👀, every groom plays a vital role in a dog or cats overall care.

Here at Backwoods Bark Barn, we strive to provide not just a great groom, but a focus also on helping you maintain and improve the health and wellbeing of your pet! 💫

As spring has sprung and warmer weather (hopefully) approaches, it is time for the seasonal PSA about double coated dogs! As many of you are aware, I do not typically shave double coated dogs unless there is a legitimate, ethical (severe extreme matting) or medical reason to do so (which I also ask for note from vet). Keeping those coats clean, dry, brushed out, and tangle-free is the ultimate goal!

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers during my recovery! I am now back to taking appointments, but please be patient with me as I continue with Physical Therapy. Please be aware that grooms may take a little longer to complete until mobility, dexterity, and strength return to my fingers and hand! Glad to be back! Blessings on everyone’s day! ❤️

Good Evening Backwoods Bark Barn Family!

Apologies for the late update, I know many of you had just a vague idea of what is going on.

On the evening of the 9th, in a freak accident, I broke, and partially amputated one of my fingers. I had reconstructive surgery on the 10th, and have been a bit out of it due to meds in the days following. That being said, after my post-operation appointment today, prognosis looks very good, but it will still be another month before I will be able to go back to work. Scheduled recovery is as follows.

They will be pulling the pins out of my bones on December 19th.

The two weeks following I will be in therapy to stretch and work the ligaments affected in the accident.

Then, as of January 5th, I will be back to work!

That being said, I will be calling everyone to re-schedule and work things out in the meantime.

Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding!

Good afternoon! We have been requested to share a lovely pup looking for a new home! Please message the business page if interested, and we can get you in touch with this sweet pup’s owners!

“We have made a difficult decision to attempt to rehome our dog, Griffey. He is a 2 year old Double Doodle (goldendoodle/labradoodle mix). Birthday is May 2nd. He is up to date on shots. He has no known health issues and is about 60 pounds.

Griffey is very energetic and playful, and he has been good around our boys. He also enjoys going on walks. Unfortunately, allergy issues within our home are becoming difficult to manage which has led us to this tough decision.

We are asking for a small rehoming fee of $100. This will include his crate/bed, toys, food/water bowls, and remaining food. If you have any questions, please reach out to one of us directly.”
