“Congrats on your failure. Most people don’t even try.”

When I was reading this quote, I thought about it in a dog sports way at first. Trying for the title. Trying for that ribbon. But I think it applies deeper than that, with many life lessons, but even in just the dog and handler way.

You might not have a winning training session every night. You might not have a totally reaction free dog walk. You might not have nailed that trick yet that you’ve been working on. But you’re showing up for your dog every day. You’re trying. And most people don’t even try that. That’s something to be proud of.

Our Puppy Graduate class hit the trails today to practice recall! 🐾🌲

The handlers got to see how different recalling at home can be from recalling out in the world, where there are new smells, sights, and distractions everywhere!

We worked on engagement games, rewarding voluntary check ins, and understanding the difference between a casual “let’s go” and a formal recall.

It feels great when your puppy comes back nine out of ten times, but that tenth time matters, too! This is where our long lines help us safely guide them back and follow through, even when something else catches their attention. We want to build the understanding that recall means coming back every time we call and that returning to us is always worth it!

Can’t wait to see the progress these teams make between now and next class!

Adventure Dogs Harlow, Hudson, and Mack!

Harlow and Hudson worked in Tractor Supply on neutrality around passing people, dogs, and the new environment. They ended their adventure day with a nice new trail to check out with wooden stairs, walkways, and bridges! This was a great opportunity to build confidence on strange surfaces. This was their first adventure dog, so we took some extra time to get them comfortable with both trainers, our car crates, and training with us. Both dogs have gotten groomed with us and Harlow is currently taking lessons with Trainer Kayla.

Mack is on his third adventure with us and he’s always so eager to hop into the car to get going! Today Mack joined a pack walk with Hero and Papaya to kick off his adventure. He’s really getting great with his recall and we’re upping the requirements for it now. We ended at the river to work around people as Mack is such a lover and can get distracted by them. We brushed up on some leash skills and placing on different surfaces.

Puppy Classes are in full swing!

Puppy Graduates are out working on engagement games, leash walking, neutrality work around other dogs/people, settling in new environments, and locking down on those obedience skills. Next week we hit the trails to work on recall!

Taylor’d Puppy Academy is working on learning what sit and down are, engagement games, marker words, and confidence building exercises. Next week they start hitting all the fun confidence building material and learning how to greet new people.
