There’s nothing quite like a good, stable older dog when it comes to helping raise a puppy. ❤️

As trainers, there are things we can teach puppies through training, structure, and exposure but there are also things another well-balanced dog can communicate far more naturally through appropriate corrections and dog body language.

Over the years, Zara and Hero have helped teach A LOT of puppies and dogs. They’ve each played a really important role in helping us raise our own dogs and work with countless client dogs, just in very different ways.

Zara is our tried and true “puppy raiser.” She’s gentle, patient, and tolerant, but firm when she needs to be. She communicates clearly and never over corrects. When she does give a correction, it’s appropriate and well deserved.
But what I love most is what happens afterward.

There’s no grudge or continued pressure. She lets it go. She’ll offer play, disengage, or give calm, neutral body language that tells the puppy, “That interaction is over. Make a better choice and we can move on.”

That ability to appropriately correct and then immediately move forward is something puppies can learn SO much from.

Pictures from this week’s group classes

From our littlest learners in Puppy Class to both of our Adult Obedience & Relationship Building groups, everyone put in some great work this week!

Puppy Class started laying the foundations for leash walking, practiced being comfortable on the grooming/exam table, and got introduced to nail-care tools including clippers and the Dremel. We also expanded on our puppy obstacle course, giving the pups even more opportunities to build confidence, body awareness, and problem-solving skills!

Adult Obedience & Relationship Building focused heavily on leash walking skills this week. After practicing the mechanics, we took those skills out for a group stroll so everyone could work around real world distractions while building better communication and engagement with their dogs.

A busy day with lots of pups working on lots of different things!

Dropped in for a walk with Saoirse and Mochara today. It was our first time meeting Mochara and he is such a confident, eager pup! His big sister Saoirse has done a great job showing him the ropes of the world, and we’re excited to watch him grow!

Maggie “helped” me while I cleaned up the yard today… and by helped, I mean she was incredibly distracting 😂 She is the absolute sweetest girl and spent most of her time requesting love with those puppy dog eyes. It’s pretty hard to get anything done when you have a face like that staring at you! It’s going to be a sad day when her family comes back from vacation because we’ve really enjoyed having this sweet girl around!

Kora and Bailey have officially become best buds! They absolutely love zooming around together. Bailey was a little nervous about meeting a new friend, but Kora is such an easy, sweet, gentle girl that she helped Bailey feel comfortable and they quickly became fast friends!

JJ, Phoebe, and Zeke headed to the park for some training and exploring!

JJ worked on leash walking and obedience skills while also getting the opportunity to take in the world around him.

Phoebe is learning how to settle in new environments and work through some of her anxiety instead of feeling like she always has to be on alert.

Zeke is learning that balls are SUPER fun and starting to learn how to use that nose of his! 👃

Different dogs, different goals, and lots of opportunities to learn!

Happy National Dog Day!

Which is basically the same thing as Christmas around here at Taylor’d K9 Training. 😂🐾

We live and breathe dogs. Literally. I’m pretty sure at this point in my life I have a set of lungs made entirely out of dog hair.

I’ve been reflecting a lot lately on our business and on all the different roles dogs have given me the opportunity to have like a dog trainer, dog owner, dog handler, dog control officer, competitor, student, and so many others.

Every one of those titles has given me hands
on experiences and education that I never could have gotten from a book or a classroom alone.

Dogs have introduced me to some of the most important people in my life. I mean, I even met my wife because of dogs.

I’ve had mentors who taught me incredible things, and I’ve had mentors who taught me exactly who I never want to become. I’ve taken bits and pieces from all of those experiences and used them to push myself further, seek more education, ask more questions, work more dogs, and gain more experience.

I hope I never satisfy that craving for knowledge. I hope there is always another question I want answered, another dog that makes me think differently, another skill I want to learn, and another opportunity that makes me a better trainer and handler.

I owe that to every dog that has ever been placed in my hands.

But I want that for my clients, too.

I want clients who crave learning about their dogs. Who want to do more with them. Who want to see the potential in their dogs that we see.

So on National Dog Day, I want you to really think about the dog sitting next to you.

Are you fulfilling them?

Are you meeting more than just their basic needs? Are they getting the mental and physical stimulation they need?

Are you happy with the relationship you have with your dog?

Is there something you wish you could do together that you can't do right now?

And most importantly can you truly enjoy your dog with the level of training you currently have?

Training should give you the ability to build the life you want to live together.

For me, some of the absolute best days with my dogs aren't spent winning anything.

A quiet creek, off leash freedom, a chilled afternoon lying under the sun. Watching my dogs explore, swim, sniff and just be dogs without me having to worry about where they're going or whether they'll come back when I call.

And we're able to have those days because they have the training necessary to give them that freedom.

That's what training means to me.
Not creating perfect dogs.

Creating a relationship, communication and skills that allow you to experience more of life together.

So maybe the best gift you can give your dog this National Dog Day isn't another toy or treat.

Maybe it's asking yourself:
What else could we do together?

We’re about to soft launch something pretty cool… 👀

ADVENTURE DOGS are coming to Taylor’d K9 Training!

Who has a dog that would LOVE to become one of our Adventure Dogs? 👀🐕🌲

We’ve been working on a new way to give dogs more opportunities to get out, explore, train, and just do dog things without their owners having to rearrange their day to make it happen.

For our Adventure Dogs, we’ll pick your dog up right from your home, take them out for their adventure, and bring them back home when we’re done!

Think hiking, structured walks, parks, dog friendly stores, training outings, scent and detection games, enrichment, confidence building, treadmill sessions at our facility when the weather doesn't cooperate, and plenty of adventures tailored to the individual dog.

We’ll be offering:
🐾 30-Minute Neighborhood Walks
We come to you and take your dog for a structured walk right around their neighborhood.

🌲 1-Hour Adventure Dogs
Pick up and drop off at your home with a full hour of adventure time.

🥾 2-Hour Adventure Dogs
Pick up and drop off at your home with two full hours to explore, train and get some serious physical and mental fulfillment.

☀️ Full Adventure Days
Drop your dog off at our Coxsackie training facility in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon for a full day of adventures, training, enrichment and downtime.

We’ll be servicing areas from Catskill to Glenmont, including Athens, Coxsackie, Ravena/Coeymans, Selkirk, South Bethlehem and surrounding areas.

This will be a soft launch with limited availability while we get our routes, scheduling, and Adventure Dog crew established.

More details, pricing, requirements and booking information are coming soon!
