CFD Engine Company #4 - Retired

CFD Engine Company #4 - Retired CFD Engine Co. 4 was built in 1888 as a horsedrawn carriage Fire Company. It is now a private residence dedicated to maintaining its proud history.

Engine Company No. 4, built in 1888, served as part of the Covington Fire Department until it was converted in the early 1980's. It was the last of the old time firehouses before it closed. The firemen knew everyone in the neighborhood and answered about 450 alarm calls each year. The front facade was adorned with 2 cast horse heads that are the symbol for the fire department. Each year the fireme

n would hang their predicted KY Derby winners names on the horse heads for all of Main Street to see. The original horse heads were removed when the firehouse closed and were relocated to the fire house on Scott Street where they still hang proudly today. Fast forward and opportunity arose for the property to be converted into a residence. Around 1983 the old fire house was converted into the residence it is today. At that time, the owner made 2 apartments on the upper floor, one in front and one in back. The security door in between the units can be opened up so that the entire space can be used as one living area. The first floor is used for an enormous garage that can house 6-8 cars and has a roomy laundry area. On the back of the building, stairs and decks were added for separate entry. The apartments are set up with lofty ceilings, skylights and original wood floors. A previous owner was a potter and made all the tiles in the kitchens and bathrooms.

At our recent CFD Open House, Retired Lieutenant Jerry Kirby, who served at Co. 4, entrusted us with a bunch of his old equipment. This gift included his turnout gear, an O2 mask in the box that was actually on Pumper 4, a bunch of documentation and inspection reports, various patches (which I just put into a shadow box today) and his amazing helmet onto which he himself installed a copper eagle's head. Such awesome additions to maintain the great history of this building. They will definitely find places of distinction here. Thank you, Jerry Kirby!

This morning, as I let the dogs out, I found this plaque sitting atop our mailbox in the backyard. It's as if our mailbox is becoming a gift repository for Engine Co. 4 memorabilia. While I was just inside the door, I distinctly heard "Billy" talking to the pups but he very quickly moved on - not the norm. I kind of wonder if he left it as a thank you for giving him a beer and hanging out with him on Saturday. I'll have to ask him. The sketch is a Caroline Williams piece, a notable Cincinnati artist pictured in 1944. I remember talking to Mark Kohlhas - the gentleman who rehabbed the firehouse - and him noting that she had done a sketch of Co. 4. The sketch shows St. Aloysius's steeple in the background so is from before the 1985 St. Aloysius fire which burned the church to the ground.

The text on the plaque reads:

"In 1888, the horse was the recognized symbol of a fire department. That year, the small firehouse on the corner of Main and Emma Streets in Covington was built with horses' heads standing out prominently above the doorway. The ornate building remains part of the quiet neighborhood, where the tower of St. Aloysius Church rises in the background. - Sketch by Caroline Williams."

Pretty cool start to our Wednesday.

Unless anyone objects or there is reason not to - December 10th (after Breakfast with Santa), we'll again be having an open house. Pizza, beer and soft drinks (for those on duty). Again, just a simple thank you to those who serve. We'll post more as it gets closer. Be safe! 12/10/2016.

How cool is this? Retired Covington Fire Department Lieutenant Jerry Kirby contacted me recently. He actually helped to shut down Engine Co. 4 when it was retired from service. He told me he had an old firehose cart, manufactured in 1901, that was used at Ashland Oil and was looking for a suitable home for it. We were absolutely thrilled to receive it today. Even better, we already had a length of firehose and a nozzle that we could use with it. I plan to sand it and give it a fresh coat of paint - though I have to say it looks kind of cool as a rusty antique. Thanks so much to Jerry Kirby for thinking of us and entrusting us with this historic piece of equipment!

Do any of our Firefighter friends know if this button is off of a uniform? I found it wedged down in a corner between the brick and concrete garage floor.

Rick Allen, on the left, installed this door 20 years ago and apparently has worked on and installed garage doors for various CFD stations and other Fire Departments, as well. Like I said, just another piece of the puzzle.
