Bowman has been waiting for his happy ending since March

He came to us as a stray with a broken front leg. No chip, no ID, just a very sweet dog with a serious injury that needed time to heal.

For weeks, Bowman was on strict activity restriction. He had a cast, an e-collar, crate rest, and a lot of time spent waiting. That is hard on any dog, but especially a young dog who just wants to be with people.

And that is very much Bowman.

He loves people and wants to be part of whatever is going on. He greets everyone like they are already his friend, leans in for attention, and is happiest when he gets to be near someone. Even while he was healing, he still showed us how sweet he is. He would settle on a bed, chew on his toys, and soak up any time he got with people.

Now Bowman is finally off restrictions and ready for a home of his own.

He is 1 year old, 54 lbs, happy, goofy, affectionate, and just excited to be included again. He has been in playgroup with another playful dog and did well.

Bowman has spent most of his time with us healing. Now he deserves the chance to just be a dog again.

Stop in and meet Bowman at Kenton County Animal Services!

We all love getting outside with our dogs in Northern Kentucky. Keeping those places clean also helps protect the waterways we share.

When it comes to pet waste, remember: Bag it. Trash it. Don’t leave it behind.

Every pet deserves a home, and every home deserves clean water. Thanks to SD1 for helping spread the word this National Pet Month.

Does your pup love our region’s creeks or streams? Drop a photo of your dog enjoying Northern Kentucky’s waterways in the comments.

Mulder is somehow still looking for his people.

He’s 11 months old, 40 lbs, and currently hanging out in a foster home where he has been showing off his sweet personality. His foster says he is a total velcro dog and is happiest when he’s snuggled up on the couch with his people.

Mulder is still very much a pup but has been polite on walks, quiet in his crate, and has been doing well with the senior dog in his foster home. He would love a dog friend in his future home! He does need a home with no cats.

Email [email protected] to set up a meet and greet with Mulder!

🐾 Pause before you “kit-nap!” 🐾

If you find a litter of kittens outside, their mom may be closer than you think. Mother cats often leave their kittens tucked safely away while they search for food, but usually return to care for them. For very young kittens, staying with mom gives them the best chance to grow healthy and strong.

Before moving the kittens, give mom a chance to come back. One easy way to check is by putting a circle of flour around them and leaving the area for a couple of hours. When you return, look for adult cat paw prints in the flour.

🐱 Paw prints = Mom is coming back and caring for her babies.
🐱 No signs of mom after several hours = The kittens may need help.

Unless the kittens are injured or in immediate danger, the best thing you can do is monitor from a distance and keep the family together whenever possible.

If you find a mom and babies or kittens that need help, give us a call at 859-356-7400 to discuss next steps.

Make a shelter dog part of your summer adventures with our Daytrip Program! 🐾

Whether it’s a walk through the park, a pup cup run, a hiking trip or just relaxing together for the afternoon, our dogs love the chance to get out of the shelter and spend time with new friends.

Daytrips do more than give our dogs a fun day out! They help us learn more about the dog's personality outside the shelter environment. The photos, notes and experiences you share can help potential adopters see just how special they are and bring the dog one step closer to finding a forever home.

Visit https://bit.ly/KCASfoster to learn more about our foster and volunteer opportunities.

Taking care of shelter pets isn’t just walks and treats.

There’s a lot of cleaning behind the scenes. Think washing bowls, spraying kennels, doing laundry- all of it using water.

That water doesn’t just disappear. It goes down the drain and gets treated by SD1 before returning to the environment where it can be reused. Same goes for your home.

See how it all connects and how you can help: sd1.org/659/Splash-for-Animal-Shelters
