🐦 Bird of the Week: Northern Cardinal ❤️

One of the most recognizable and beloved birds in St. Tammany Parish is the Northern Cardinal. Whether you're enjoying your morning coffee or relaxing in the backyard, chances are you've spotted one of these brilliant red beauties nearby.

These videos were captured right here in our area using a FeatherSnap camera (purchased at Backyard Birds & Gardens), giving us a close-up look at one of Louisiana's favorite backyard visitors.

Did you know?
🔴 Male cardinals are bright red, while females are a beautiful warm brown with touches of red on their wings and tail.

🎶 Both male and female cardinals sing! The female often sings from the nest to communicate with her mate.

🏡 Cardinals don't migrate, which means they're year-round residents of St. Tammany Parish.

🐣 Cardinals can raise two to three broods of babies each nesting season, and right now many parents are busy feeding young birds throughout our area.

🌻 Cardinals love sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, peanuts, and fresh water, making them frequent visitors to backyard feeders.

🐦 Bird of the Week: Prothonotary Warbler 💛

One of the brightest birds in Louisiana, the Prothonotary Warbler is a true summer treasure!

These brilliant golden-yellow songbirds migrate thousands of miles from the tropics each spring to nest right here in Southeast Louisiana. Unlike many warblers, they nest in cavities and will readily use nest boxes placed near water.

In fact, several local bird enthusiasts in St. Tammany Parish are lucky enough to host nesting Prothonotary Warblers in their own backyards!

✨ Fun Facts:
• Nicknamed the "Golden Swamp Warbler"
• One of the few warblers that nests in cavities
• Prefers wooded areas near swamps, bayous, ponds, and streams
• Winters in Central and South America before returning each spring
