BREAKING NEWS: Wilma officially turned 10 yesterday and celebrated like the queen she is. 👑🧇

The birthday menu included homemade sweet cream waffles, unlimited snuggles, and approximately 47 reminders that she is, in fact, still a baby.

Ten years of side-eyes, shedding, judging my life choices, and being the absolute best girl. Happy 10th Birthday to Wilma — senior citizen by age, waffle enthusiast by heart. 🐾

Big thanks to Erik Jacobsenfor all your support! Congrats for being top fans on a streak 🔥!

Nine biological facts you may not know about Boxers.

Fun fact; The Boxer was the first canine to have their DNA genone sequenced.

The Boxer whose DNA became the first high-quality reference genome for dogs was named 'Tasha the Boxer'.

Researchers analyzed about 60 dog breeds and chose a Boxer because the breed had relatively low genetic variation, which makes assembling a reference genome much easier and more accurate.

The sequencing project was conducted by scientists at the Broad Institute (MIT/Harvard) with funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Why Tasha’s genome was important:

Her DNA became the reference genome used to study:
•Genetic diseases in dogs
•Breed differences and traits
•Evolution of mammals
•Diseases shared by dogs and humans (like cancer, epilepsy, and heart disease). grg.org +1*

Because dog breeds often have well-documented lineages and inherited conditions, comparing their genes to Tasha’s reference genome helped scientists identify genes responsible for many diseases and traits.

Even today, many canine genetics studies still compare other dogs’ DNA to Tasha’s genome, making her one of the most influential dogs in scientific research.

"Why We Call Them a “Soul Dog”

Who is your soul dog? Mine is the beautiful Wilma von der Burg Singidunum. When I saw a picture of her at about 1 y.o. something changed in my heart and I knew I had to have her. It took me a year to convince the Singidunum kennel in Croatia to sell her to me. It was well worth it. Tell us about your soul dog in the comments. 💜
