We needed to post another reminder about bobcat fever, also known as cytauxzoonosis.

We found another case of it in a local cat last night. The only way to fight it is to prevent it. Ticks are getting more aggressive with their feedings now before it gets cold. Please get topical tick prevention for your cats, even if they're only indoors.

Please be aware there is an increase in bobcat fever in Kansas. This is a fatal disease that domestic cats can get through tick bites.

Signs of bobcat fever to look out for:

High fever
Loss of appetite
Extreme lethargy
Difficulty breathing
Pale or yellow gums
Swollen lymph nodes
Dehydration

It's important to act quickly if your cat shows any symptoms.

Monthly tick prevention is key to keeping your cat safe. Contact Dr. Schroeder for prevention or if you see signs of this in your cat.
