Congratulations to Axyl and his handler on successfully passing their Human Remains Detection certification through NASAR! 🎉🐾

I can remember back to last summer, selecting this little guy at just 8 weeks old and then bringing him home from New York State at 12 weeks old for a cross-country trip. It’s pretty incredible to see how far he has come.

One of my favorite things about being a handler trainer are the relationships I build with each team—not only with the handler, but with the K9 as well. Watching that partnership develop, overcome challenges, and ultimately become a certified working team is truly an amazing experience.

I’m extremely proud of Axyl and his handler and look forward to watching this team put their training to work and serve their community.

Congratulations, team! The hard work is just beginning. 🐕‍🦺💪

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Indiana Search and Response Team for an incredible 32-hour, three-day workshop. Throughout the weekend, we placed a heavy emphasis on K9 Trailing and Human Remains Detection, while also getting in some Area Search runs.

Over the course of the seminar, teams worked through a variety of operationally focused scenarios while continuing to build and refine their individual skills. I am incredibly proud of every K9 team for stepping outside of their comfort zones and embracing challenging problems that pushed them to grow.

The goal of every workshop I teach is not simply to create successful searches, but to help handlers develop a deeper understanding in reading their dog, interpret the environments, and critically think during a deployment. We strive to bridge the gap between training and real-world operations by designing scenarios that mirror operational searches.

Everyone enjoys a successful find—and they should. Those moments are rewarding. The greatest lessons often develop from difficult problems and even unsuccessful runs. Every search, regardless of the outcome, provides valuable experience, strengthens the team, and makes us better prepared for the day someone is counting on a deployable K9 resource.

Saturday night we worked a variety of exercises with both new and experienced K9 teams. Our newer dogs focused on environmental exposure, confidence building, short trailing problems, and point-to-point exercises to learn how to break for odor and use the wind.

Our more experienced teams stepped it up with on lead-concealed human detection scenarios. We also incorporated laser-directional send-outs, working at distance with clear communication and precision.

Every training day is an opportunity to build stronger dogs, more capable handlers, and better working teams. Progress doesn’t happen by accident—it comes from consistent, purposeful training.

I can’t complain when I get to start and end my day doing what I love… working dogs.
