Incubation Series Part 1: 𝐄𝐠𝐠 π’πžπ₯𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐒𝐨𝐧

Many hatch problems begin before eggs ever enter the incubator. Choosing the right hatching eggs plays a major role in embryo development, hatch success, and chick quality. If you want stronger, healthier chicks, egg selection is the first step.

πŸ”¬ Why Egg Selection Is So Important
The embryo relies entirely on the nutrients inside the egg and the shell’s ability to regulate moisture and oxygen exchange. Eggs with structural or quality issues often lead to poor development, early embryo loss, or weak chicks.

βœ… π‘Šβ„Žπ‘Žπ‘‘ π‘šπ‘Žπ‘˜π‘’π‘  π‘Ž π‘”π‘œπ‘œπ‘‘ β„Žπ‘Žπ‘‘π‘β„Žπ‘–π‘›π‘” 𝑒𝑔𝑔?

πŸ’’ Shape:
β€’ Oval and symmetrical eggs hatch most successfully
β€’ Avoid eggs that are very round or overly pointed, as they can increase the risk of chicks developing in the wrong position during hatch

πŸ“ Size:
β€’ Medium-sized eggs typically produce the healthiest chicks
β€’ Very small eggs often produce undersized chicks
β€’ Extra-large eggs may have lower hatch success and can produce weaker chicks

πŸ† Shell Quality:
β€’ Smooth, normal shell texture is ideal
β€’ Avoid eggs with wrinkles, thin spots, cracks, or heavy calcium deposits
β€’ Shell defects can interfere with moisture loss and gas exchange during development

🧼 Clean vs Dirty Eggs:
β€’ Slightly dirty eggs may still be usable if contamination is minimal
β€’ Washing eggs improperly can remove the protective cuticle and allow bacteria to enter the shell
β€’ Heavily soiled eggs are generally not recommended for incubation due to infection risk

πŸ“… Egg Age & Storage Matters
β€’ Best hatch rates typically occur when eggs are set within 1–7 days after being laid
β€’ Hatchability often declines after about 10 days
β€’ Store eggs:
β€’ Around 55–65Β°F (13–18Β°C)
β€’ With moderate humidity (about 70–75%)
β€’ With the large end slightly elevated
β€’ Turn daily if storing longer than 3 days

πŸ” Don’t Forget the Breeder Flock
The health, nutrition, and age of the parent flock strongly influence egg quality and hatch success. Unhealthy birds can result in poorly chicks.

Remember: Even perfect incubation conditions cannot overcome poor egg quality.

πŸ“Έ Check out the photos in this post showing examples of good vs risky hatching eggs and shell quality comparisons.

πŸ’¬ I’d love to hear from you:
Do you carefully select eggs for incubation, or do you hatch everything collected? What differences have you noticed in hatch success?

πŸ“Œ Save this post as a reference for your next hatch and follow along for Part 2, where we’ll discuss proper egg storage before incubation.

What in the chicken farming nonsense is this piece of "writing"? 100% written by AI or someone who has never had any of these breeds.

This is the real tea on these breeds:

Brahma: absolute tank of a gentle giant. Not a mean wishbone in this body! Will stand in line for snuggles. Stuck around to make sure chores got done right and eat spilled grains when they didn't.

Cornish: more likely to wattle to the feeder and give bombastic side eye than attack anything, they watch the Olympics from the side line. All muscle no brains. Signing up for poultry shows behind your back!

Dorking: 5 toed bird sloth, would rather dust bathe than attack, entirely missed the memo to attack at dawn. Chased a fly and got lost.

Lakenvelder: would like for you to quit trying to make eye contact, most likely to be found in the highest tree, because coops are for loosers. Probably laid it's egg in a puddle. Sorry not sorry. Property lines are a suggestion.

Wyandottes: ok you may have something here, if they are not at the top of the pecking order they are on their way and you won't stop them πŸ’ͺ🏽 Who needs a rooster if you have a wyandotte hen!

***Marek's Vaccine***

πŸ£πŸ¦ πŸ’‰ Protecting Your Chicks from Day One

ℹ️ Marek’s disease is a highly contagious viral illness that can cause paralysis, tumors, and sudden loss in chickens. The best defense is prevention, and vaccination at hatch is one of the most effective ways to protect your flock.

ℹ️ At Feather Farm’s Entles, chick health is a top priority. The Marek’s vaccine helps reduce the risk and severity of this disease, giving chicks a stronger start and supporting long-term flock health. While the vaccine does not prevent infection entirely, it significantly lowers the chance of illness and spread.

ℹ️ Chicks must receive the Marek’s vaccine as close to hatch as possible for best protection. Maintaining good biosecurity, clean brooders, and low-stress environments also plays an important role in keeping birds healthy.

ℹ️ Have questions about Marek’s vaccination or chick care? Drop them in the comments or send a message. Always happy to help you raise strong, thriving birds. πŸ“πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’š

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Yolk sac (umbilical) hernias in chicks are an important issue every poultry keeper and breeder should understand, especially during hatch season. Early recognition can help improve welfare and guide responsible care decisions.

🐣 What is a Yolk Sac / Umbilical Hernia?
This condition occurs when a chick’s navel does not close properly after hatching. When this happens, the yolk sac or, in severe cases, intestinal tissue can protrude from the abdomen.

πŸ” Signs to Watch For
β€’ Visible protrusion: A bulge or sac hanging from the chick’s abdomen
β€’ Unhealed navel: Scabby, moist, or open navel area
β€’ β€œMushy chick” symptoms: Soft, swollen abdomen with a foul odor similar to rotten eggs (often linked to infection)
β€’ Behavior changes: Lethargy, huddling, reduced appetite, or depression
β€’ High mortality risk: Many affected chicks decline within the first 3–5 days of life

🩺 Treatment & Care Considerations
β€’ Prognosis: Severe hernias usually have a poor outcome
β€’ Supportive care: Keep affected chicks warm, dry, clean, and separated from healthy chicks
β€’ Veterinary guidance: Mild cases may sometimes improve with careful drying of the area or topical antiseptics such as iodine under veterinary direction. Severe cases may require humane euthanasia to prevent prolonged suffering.

πŸ“š Why This Matters
Umbilical issues are often linked to incubation or hatch conditions, bacterial contamination, or developmental problems. Monitoring hatch conditions, sanitation, and breeder flock health can help reduce occurrence.

Have you ever encountered yolk sac or umbilical issues in your hatchlings? What management practices have helped improve your hatch outcomes? Sharing experiences helps strengthen our poultry community and supports better chick welfare.
