Happy World Lizard Day 2026! 🦎
Celebrated every August 14, World Lizard Day shines a spotlight on some of the most fascinating reptiles on Earth.
Lizards come in an extraordinary variety of shapes, colors, and sizes, from tiny geckos to the Komodo dragon, the world’s largest living lizard. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, and different species can climb smooth surfaces, change color for communication, run across water, and even regrow a lost tail.
They also play an important role in healthy ecosystems. Many lizards help control insect populations, while also providing food for birds, mammals, and other animals. Habitat loss, illegal wildlife trafficking, invasive species, and climate change threaten lizard populations around the world.
