So here is the thing about a Great C**t Starter, and a Great upbringing!!

Shorty is a 6 year old Handcock and Blackburn Bred Mare I started years ago! She had maybe 90 days with me and half of that was ground work and learning each other.

Shorty went home, and was turned out to finish growing for almost an entire year! She came back to me for 2 weeks for a quick refresher and then carried her Momma at her first show ever!

Shorty has then sat, and mainly had her ground work kept up on. I was asked to come give her a refresher again as she has decided to let that Handcock breeding show 😂 and has been quite sassy!

Shorty has been ridden a hand full of times in the last almost 3 years. Today we did all our ground work, long lined, and away we went!

Was it pretty? Not the whole time. However she showed us so much of her potential!

Im forever proud of this Mare and the work that has been put into her 🥰 she even took her Momma for a ride (pictures to come)

Now what I am getting at. When they are raised and started properly it should never matter how long they sit stagnant! They should always be a lady or a gentleman when we ask something of them. And she is living proof of that! Shorty always comes back to work like the Lady she is!

I should be able to turn my horse out after starting them with zero concern they will (Forget) these animals NEVER forget! Especially Shorty!

OH! And this was her first ever ride with a BIT!

Today May 9th 2026 my fiancé and I will be patting ourselves on the back. Back in 2022 I went public with my training program in the back yard of my parents house after forcibly selling the home I bought at 21 years old. A year ago today we signed the papers to purchase something some horse people only dream about!

It has been my life’s dream since I was atleast 7 years old to run a facility of my own. A year ago today I got that. I now own and operate a facility with a dozen or more horses.

Most days it is just my fiancé and I. He works full time teaching math, and the barn along side me at the end of his day teaching. It is just us. Friends, family, and some clients help around when they can or see we need it and we are so very thankful for them.

It has been a tough road, from unexpected bills-a major EHV outbreak in the country-a drought that brought a horrible hay crop for us horse people-hay, gas, and feed pricing sky rocketing over this past year.

However we have made so many connections with amazing horses and clients.

I was forced to step away from my training program the beginning of winter. This first year had just become so overwhelming. Being frank, it is all terribly overwhelming. But I know it all comes with that cost.

I spent my whole life working in boarding facilities, managing finances, managing breeding programs, lesson programs, feed arrangements, orders, jump riding training horses for trainers, and investing in my own riding, you name it I have done it.

No matter what the future may bring, I never get to look back and say I never did it! Because I DID IT!

Forever my dream! JC Horsemanship LLC

With our first year at our new farm comes to a wrap. We have learned so much, met so many people. As well as had our hardships.

In the coming months we are having to make price adjustments to cover costs due to price increases on products, equipment, maintenance, and utilities needed to keep the facility afloat. As each of those have risen over the past year.

Its an unfortunate thing for us to have to do but in order to keep growing and improving our care we must.

We adore you all 🥰

The state of Maine is in a major hay shortage EMERGENCY because of this past summers drought! Im putting this post out there asking for everyone to share contact and info on any and all suppliers and ideas for everyone struggling. This along with fuel prices are going to make alot of barns face closure. Or raised prices. Remember your barn is doing whats best for your animals!

Drop in the comment and hacks, info, availability, you name it in the comments. Were all facing this together ❤️ lets help each other!

Examples: Contact info to suppliers in state, Contact info for shippers from out of state (maybe a bunch of us can get together on a load), Safe Hay replacements, etc.

Happy Easter! The farm will be set up for our departure to spend the evening with our family after 4 😊 if you need to please message Brian or I with any concerns!

I hope you all have a lovely Easter! 🐣 🐰

Just a reminder the farm is under consistent camera surveillance, along with normally 1-2 people here at all times 😊 just because you do not see someone does not mean no one is here 😊

We had a wicked cool afternoon at the farm! This is Folly, she has been a life long resident at our farm since even before we owned it! She is 25(ish) this year! Her owner was born right here at our Farm! Yes you saw that right, her OWNER! This lovely girl hasn’t been ridden on about a decade and she rode off after a long winter of preparation. A little peep of her and my not so little 6 foot plus tall little cousin!

Folly a big stunning Percheron/Thoroughbred Cross has been a resident at Sawtelle Family Farm (Now JC Horsemanship LLC since she was 2 years old. She was an Orphan Foal born to a Mare whom was used for collecting hormones for Birth Control.
