You want to know what it feels like right now?

It feels like no one is adopting.
It feels like everyone is surrendering.

It feels like rescues have nowhere to send them because their kennels are full too.

It feels like no one is spaying or neutering
because everything is too expensive.

It feels like no one is fostering.
No one is volunteering.
No one has time.

But we keep posting.

And posting.
And posting.

Hoping this one will be the one someone stops for.

We get likes.
We get shares.

But we don’t get them out.

And the dogs keep coming.
And the cats keep coming.

And the kennels keep filling.

And filling.
And filling.

So what happens when there’s nowhere left?

What are we supposed to do then?

Because people ask,

“Why do they have a deadline?”
Because space has a deadline.

“Why is everything code red?”
Because everything is.

Maybe not today.
Maybe not tomorrow.

But without somewhere to go…
how long do they really have?

We took in 220 animals last month.

43 were adopted.
5 made it back home.
68 made it out through rescue.

88 were euthanized.

Some are still here.
Some were here last month.
Some were here the month before that.

Some may never make it out.
Some never made it to the adoption floor.

We wish these were just numbers.
They’re not.

They’re kennels that didn’t empty.
They’re intakes that didn’t stop.
They’re decisions we never want to make
but still have to.

Because while we’re trying to move animals out… more are already coming in.

There are more animals than there are homes.

That’s the reality.
Not just here… everywhere.

And the worst part?

It’s not that no one wants them.
It’s that the right person hasn’t shown up yet.

But “yet” doesn’t stop intake.
“Yet” doesn’t open kennels.
“Yet” doesn’t buy time.

And we know people care.
We see the likes.
We see the shares.

But we need more than that.

💛 So if you’re reading this

We don’t just need you to care.
We need you to act.

Adopt. https://knoxwhitleyhumane.org/adoptable-animals

Foster. https://knoxwhitleyhumane.org/foster-application

Volunteer. https://knoxwhitleyhumane.org/get-involved

Talk to someone who can.

Spay and neuter.
We have ways to help with the cost.
https://knoxwhitleyhumane.org/spay%2Fneuter-vouchers

Because right now, there are more animals than there are time or options.

And we are running out of both.

We know you care.
We just need you to show up before it’s too late.

Because next month’s numbers?

They’re already starting.

And we can’t change them without you.

Visit http://knoxwhitleyhumane.org to find out how you can help.

Better yet, come in person.

🗣️ NEW CREW JUST DROPPED 🤩

We don’t know what’s in the water lately… but these four showed up and immediately formed a group chat without us.

Let’s meet the chaos:

🐾 Austyn – will stare at you until you question your entire existence
🐾 Oma – knows your secrets and is choosing not to expose you (for now)
🐾 Oscar – baby. just… baby. no thoughts. only vibes.
🐾 Sasuke – 60 lbs of “I am baby” and will sit on you to prove it

Different personalities. Same goal:
👉 find a couch
👉 find snacks
👉 find someone to emotionally attach to immediately

All of them are ready to start over with forever homes. 💛

⚠️ Side effects of adopting may include:
• being followed everywhere
• excessive eye contact
• loss of personal space
• being used as furniture by a 60 lb “puppy”
• unconditional love (the scary kind where they actually mean it)

Come meet them in person and pick your fighter. 😌

🚨 OH LAWD… SHE FERAL 🚨
Meet Peaches 🍑
(not peachy. not even a little bit.)

Peaches is around 1 year old and came to us with… opinions.
Strong ones.

Was she once an outside cat?
✔️ Yes.

Would she like to return to that lifestyle immediately?
✔️ Also yes.

Does she currently understand that she is indoors now?
❌ Debatable.

Peaches is not here to play games.
Peaches is not here for cuddles (…yet).
Peaches is here to survive, thrive, and judge you from across the room.

BUT hear us out

Under all that ✨spice✨ is a cat who could come around with:

👉 Patience
👉 Time
👉 Snacks (lots of snacks)
👉 A human who enjoys a challenge and maybe a little chaos

Or…
👉 A safe outdoor/barn situation where she can live her best independent life and still be cared for 🐾

Let’s be honest:
She’s not for everyone.
But to the right person?

She’s going to be hilarious, rewarding, and 100% your weird little project.

Adoption fee: $20
(we are simply asking for a small contribution toward her attitude)

Meet Lily 🌸

Lily was adopted as a tiny little baby puppy…
Spent TWO. WHOLE. YEARS growing up in a home…
learning life… loving her people… being someone’s dog…

…and then got returned due to a lifestyle change.

And just like that, she’s back here.
Like none of that ever happened.

Now she’s sitting in a kennel like:
“Wait… wasn’t I already chosen?”

🥲

About Lily (because yes, she’s still perfect):
✨ 2 years old
✨ 52 lbs of shepherd mix goodness
✨ Already knows what it’s like to be in a home
✨ Loves people (despite everything?? queen behavior honestly)

The “catch” (because there’s always one, right?):
She did test positive for heartworms.

BUT! before you scroll!

we’ve already started her on slow-kill treatment, and:

✔️ We’ll send her home with everything she needs
✔️ We’ll walk you through it
✔️ It’s manageable and she can still live a happy, normal life

This is not a reason to pass her by.

ALSO… her adoption fee is $75.

Which is…
$120 minus… some number…

Listen. It’s cheaper. That’s what matters 😌

Lily has already done the “grow up in a home” thing. She’s already learned how to love people.

She just needs someone to be her forever.

📍 Knox-Whitley Humane Association
👉 Come meet Lily. Give her a real forever this time.

🐾 Fosters Needed Now More Than Ever 🐾

We are looking for willing fosters (both short-term and long-term) to help us save more lives.

Fostering can look different for everyone, and we have a need for all kinds of homes:
• Tiny puppies & kittens who need extra care
• Nursing moms with babies
• Animals with rescue placement just waiting on transport
• Dogs and cats who simply need a break from the shelter and a better chance at being seen and adopted

Even giving an animal a few days out of the shelter can make a huge difference for them and for us. 💛

👉 Apply to foster here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfejaJUP_z36rfL6SFVi3HgEBuNtSgxNC-1KNcr6qp1kynCDg/viewform

Already filled out an application but haven’t heard from us? Please reach out! Sometimes things get missed, and we want to make sure no willing foster slips through the cracks.

We truly couldn’t do this without our fosters. If you’ve ever thought about it, this is your sign. 🐶🐱

🐾 Introducing: KWHA Pantry for a Paws 🐾

We’re so excited to share something new with our community…

Right outside our front door, you’ll now find our “Pantry for a Paws”

A small but mighty way to help keep pets in the homes that love them. ❤️

We’re incredibly grateful for the donations we receive. Sometimes we even get more than we can use or brands our picky shelter crew turns their noses up at 😅 So instead of letting it go to waste, we’re sharing it with our community.

This pantry is here for anyone who may need a little extra help feeding their pets. Whether it’s a tough week, an unexpected expense, or just needing a hand. We see you, and we’re here for you.

💛 How it works:
Take what you need.
Leave what you can.

That’s it. No questions asked. No judgment. Just neighbors helping neighbors, and pets staying where they belong.

🐶🐱 You’ll find things like:
• Bagged dry food
• Canned food
• Treats
•Cat litter when we have extra

And if you’d like to give back and help fund our mission and keep this going, you can help keep it stocked by dropping off donations anytime!

We can use things like:
•Plastic baggies (any size!)
•Dry food
•Canned food
•Treats
•Cat litter

Because sometimes, a small bag of food can be the difference between keeping a pet and having to say goodbye.

Let’s take care of each other, one paw at a time. 🐾

⏰This Pantry is open 24/7. Get what you need when we’re there, or after we’re gone!

📍We are located at 66 Busy Lane, Corbin Ky, 40701.

Today was unexpected… but it says a lot about what we’re up against.

A few months ago, we helped an owner get her dog, Arlo, neutered so she could hopefully keep him. That’s always the goal: keep pets in their homes whenever we can.

But sometimes, even when people try… things still don’t work out.

Today, she made the difficult decision to surrender him to us.

When Arlo arrived, he wasn’t in the best shape. He had skin issues, a scar from a previously embedded collar, and just needed some overall care and TLC.

Our team got to work; heartworm test, preventatives, getting him ready for the adoption floor and push to rescues. Like we do for almost every animal that comes through our doors.

Then everything changed.

We received a phone call about a Facebook post. The previous owner had posted Arlo as available just hours before bringing him in, and the comments quickly turned into panic.

People began saying he would be euthanized immediately.

That we euthanize all owner surrenders.
That we euthanize “especially pits.”
That we’re a horrible shelter.

And just like that, the narrative was written… without anyone stepping foot inside our shelter or asking what was actually happening.

A rescue saw the post and stepped up to take Arlo. And for that, we are truly grateful; this rescue has taken several of our pit mixes among other harder to place dogs, and they actually still have a couple from months ago that have yet to be adopted.

Arlo is safe with them. That’s what matters most.

But here’s the part that’s hard to say, and important to understand:

Arlo was not on a euthanasia list.

We were preparing him for adoption.

We do have to make difficult decisions sometimes. We are a high-intake shelter serving three counties. We don’t turn animals away. And yes, euthanasia is sometimes part of that reality.

But it is not our first choice.
It is not our goal.
And it is not what happens to every dog that walks through our doors.

We try. Every single day, we try.

What hurts the most in situations like this is not that a rescue stepped in. We love our rescue partners. They are a vital part of saving lives.

It’s that the conversation surrounding it can unintentionally do harm.

Because when people believe we “euthanize everything,” they don’t come adopt.
When they don’t come adopt, dogs stay longer.
When dogs stay longer, space runs out.
And when space runs out… those impossible decisions become more likely.

That’s the cycle we’re fighting every day.

We don’t need perfection from our community.
We need partnership.

If you’re angry, come talk to us.
If you’re worried, ask questions.
If you want to help, adopt, foster, volunteer, share our posts.

But please don’t let misinformation be the thing that stands between these animals and a home.

Because right now, Arlo’s story could have been the story of so many others still here.

We have several owner-surrendered dogs—yes, including pitties—waiting for someone to see them for who they are, not what the comments say they’ll become.

Come meet them.
See for yourself.

Help us change the narrative, not just for us, but for them.

Due to the outcry of urgency from the public, we’ve included in the photos below some adoptable (or previously adopted or rescued) pit mixes + other breeds. All owner surrendered. All still waiting or waited a while before getting out of the shelter.

You can view other adoptable pets on our website at knoxwhitleyhumane.org

Now, let’s save some more. 🐾

🐱 Chloe would like to file a formal complaint…

She’s been waiting patiently (okay… slightly judging everyone who walks by) and would really like to know…

why has no one adopted her yet?!

Because honestly? She’s:
✨ 1.5 years old
✨ A gorgeous longhair queen
✨ Already spayed & ready to go HOME
✨ And currently only $25 (yes… TWENTY FIVE dollars… she’s offended too)

Chloe is the total package: sweet, low-maintenance, and just waiting for someone to pick her. She’s done her part. Now she’s just sitting here like: “soooo… what’s the hold up?”

📣 Adoption Special now through Saturday (5/2):
🐱 Cats: $25
🐶 Dogs: $60
(All animals must be spayed/neutered before adoption!)

Come meet Chloe and give her the answer she’s been waiting for 💕
