As I run, I notice the dogs on the trail. Too often I’ve been seeing tools used improperly.

A few days ago a beautiful Doberman had a prong collar held taunt FOR THE WHOLE WALK. The dog was essentially being punished for walking.. A prong collar should release unless a correction is given. Another prong I saw on a dog was too tight.

A few days later I was running (again) and noticed a beautiful German Shepherd puppy -yes at 4-5 month old puppy - wearing at e-collar. Every time someone approached the dog on the trail the collar lit up. The puppy would check in with the handler - and get nothing back.

To clarify, I am positive reinforcement but if you are using tools please seek a professional. E collars and prong collars can cause more harm than good if used in correctly.

Dogs are predators we brought into our homes and expect them to acclimate.

Sometimes they learn but more often than not, we need to train them!

I wish more people knew: your dog needs to learn how to bounce back. đŸŸ

Resilience isn’t about putting your dog in overwhelming situations and expecting them to “get over it.”

It’s about giving them small, safe opportunities to experience something unfamiliar, work through it, and discover that they can handle it.

New environments.
Different surfaces.
Unexpected noises.
Being away from you.
Meeting new people.
Trying something they’ve never done before.

Every time your dog experiences something challenging and comes out the other side feeling safe and successful, you’re building confidence. đŸ’ȘđŸŒ

Because life doesn’t come with a predictable script.

The goal isn’t to create a dog who is never nervous, startled, frustrated, or uncomfortable.

The goal is to create a dog who can say:

“That was weird
 but I’m okay.”

A resilient dog isn’t a dog who never struggles.

It’s a dog who has learned that struggles are something they can work through. ❀

Start small. Support them. Let them think. Let them recover.

You’re not just training the behavior you see today—you’re building the emotional skills your dog will rely on for the rest of their life.
