🥳It’s R***r’s 11th birthday!!🥳 She is the mutt behind Miss Behaving Mutts🩷 In honor of her birthday, I thought I could answer a very old question. Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Short answer: YES! ✅
Long answer: Dogs of every age are capable of learning new things. It just takes patience, repetition and routine. It’s never too late to start training your dog! If you think you’re behind in training your puppy, or you’ve adopted an adult dog that needs some fine tuning, now is as good a time as any to start! Clover is working on becoming more comfortable with a crate. She had a tough life before being rescued, but she is in a foster home where she is getting all the love she needs and also learning to be more confident! A crate is a great tool to use when training a dog and I highly recommend them to any dog owner. Crates are known to be used for confinement but they can also be a safe space for your dog. They can create peace of mind for you when you’re out of the house, or even just out of the room, that your dog is safe and not getting into anything they shouldn’t be. It can also be a great place for your dog to rest if they ever get injured or need to be on crate rest after a medical procedure like heartworm treatment. The benefits are endless! I can help you learn everything you need to know & do if your dog is struggling to be crated. Even if your dog is still just a puppy, I highly recommend working with a professional on crate training so that you & your dog can be set up for success. 5 Things all new puppy owners NEED to do:

1. 🦮 Put that puppy on the ground! While it may be easy to carry your puppy around, it is important that you let them walk on their own and learn to walk on a leash as early as possible! (Of course don’t let them on the ground in public until they’ve had all their vaccinations!) 🦮

2. 🐕‍🦺 Teach them to potty on a leash ASAP! This will make potty training a breeze. The most common complaint I hear about potty training is “all they do is run around and play and then p*e on the floor as soon as we come inside!” Using a leash and only taking them to a designated area to potty will help them learn to do their business first, play after! Always give a treat and lots of praise as soon as they go potty! 🐕‍🦺

3. ✋🏼🐾 Touch them all over! Play with their paws, their tail, their ears, their teeth- everywhere a vet and a groomer would need to touch. Make it a positive experience for them! Use treats to let them know being handled is a good thing. ✋🏼🐾

4. ⚠️ Start crate training immediately! Crates are an excellent resource to have in your toolbox when adding a puppy to the family. Again, make it a positive space and not a punishment. Crates can be used for potty training, nap time, time-outs, and a safe place to be contained when you need to leave. ⚠️

5. 🩷 Maintain a relationship with a reliable trainer! Training in the early stages of development is more important than people realize. It can help set you and your dog up for success for the rest of their lives! If you need help with any or all of these areas, don’t hesitate to reach out! 😉🩷🐾
