We won’t be receiving this sweet baby for our lounge, as he is just a bit too old. But, this is so heartbreaking. He is in good hands now. ❤️🩹
Yesterday, at 17 years old, my family left me at a shelter. 💔
I waited for them to come back. They didn’t.
My name is Modem, and for 17 years, I woke up in a loving home. I knew every smell, every sound, every familiar place to sleep. I spent nearly my entire life being somebody’s companion. Then suddenly, I wasn’t. At 17 years old, I was surrendered to a shelter.
I’m declawed. I’m a senior. As I’ve gotten older, stress has made me struggle with using the litter box perfectly. I needed patience. I needed understanding. I needed my family to love me through the hardest part of growing old. Instead, I lost everything I had ever known.
One day I was home. The next, I was staring through the bars of a steel kennel, surrounded by strangers and unfamiliar sounds. I was so terrified and confused that I curled up and slept in my litter box.
Imagine being old and suddenly realizing no one you know is coming back for you. I don’t understand why.
Was I not good enough anymore?
Was I too old?
Was I too much work?
I promise I’m a good cat. I really am.
I don’t need another 17 years. I may not even have another few years. I just need somewhere safe to spend whatever time I have left. Somewhere I can sleep on a soft blanket instead of in a litter box. Somewhere someone will be patient when I make a mistake. Somewhere I can learn what “home” means again.
Thankfully, Community Cats of Central Arkansas Senior Program said yes. ❤️ This afternoon, I left the shelter and came into a home. But I’m still scared.
I don’t recognize anything. I don’t know these smells. I don’t know these people. I keep looking around trying to understand where I am and what happened to the life I knew for 17 years. So for now, we’re going slowly.
A quiet room. A soft bed. Good food. Gentle voices. And all the time Modem needs to realize one very important thing: No one is leaving him again.
Our Senior Program exists because cats like Modem deserve somewhere to go. The 12-year-olds. The 15-year-olds. The 17-year-olds. The ones who need medication, special food, extra cleaning, more patience or simply a soft place to spend their final chapter.
We cannot erase what happened yesterday, BUT we can make sure the rest of Modem’s story is different.
He is still wanted, he is still worthy, and he will never be abandoned again. Welcome to Community Cats, Modem… you’ll always have a place here. ❤️
