May 8th is National Pet Disaster Preparedness Day and we encourage all clubs and members to take a moment to ensure you, and your fellow dog owner, are ready for the unexpected.

Established by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Pet Disaster Preparedness Day focuses on creating safety plans for pets to ensure owners are prepared should a natural disaster strike. It encourages owners to create pet emergency kits, pet microchipping, and planning for evacuation.

As natural disasters continue to increase in frequency and intensity, it’s more important than ever to have a disaster preparedness plan in place and to make sure that includes your pets. Emergencies happen without warning, and having a clear, pet-inclusive plan ensures your animals stay safe whether you need to evacuate or shelter in place.

AKC Reunite encourages all pet owners to review their emergency kits, keep up-to-date ID and microchip information on hand, and work with local emergency management officials to stay informed.

Your clubs should also have a disaster preparedness plan and it should include:
