Today was Grace’s last day at Aspen Creek Vet. She starts veterinary school at CSU next month, and we all know she is going to do great! Today she got to help me suture a very large laceration. It provided a great opportunity for her to practice, while helping me close the incision faster, reducing anesthetic time for the patient. Win-win-win! I love teaching the next generation of future veterinarians.

This particular patient sustained a terrible laceration after a traumatic incident, and we were lucky enough to be able to use our Good Samaritan fund to cover the cost of surgery. Our Good Samaritan fund is made of client donations, and is used for cases that have a good prognosis for full return to function, but their humans are unable to pay for care. The fund covers the cost of materials and technician time, while doctors donate their time. The good news: We saved a life today! The bad news: the fund is now empty. If you want to contribute to saving animal lives and truly making a difference in their human’s life, feel free to donate to the Good Samaritan fund next time you are in 💕

It’s that time of year again in Colorado. Plus, with how warm our ‘winter’ was it’s a good idea to get your dog up to date on their heartworm tests and prevention.

April is Heartworm Awareness Month. The American Heartworm Society recommends heartworm testing once a year and using heartworm prevention all year long. Missing just one dose of heartworm prevention can lead to a pet getting infected. If you and your pet are headed to the veterinarian’s office this spring for an annual check-up, be sure you leave the clinic with heartworm prevention!
