Training Tip Tuesday: Give Your Reactive Dog More Space!

Does your dog bark, lunge, or struggle to focus when they see another dog? One of the most helpful things you can do is give them more distance!

When dogs feel overwhelmed, learning can be difficult. Instead of asking your dog to sit and stay while another dog approaches, try creating more space so they can feel comfortable and focus on you.

A few tips to try:

Cross the street or change direction when you see a trigger approaching.

Reward your dog for noticing another dog without reacting.

Keep enough distance that your dog can still take treats and respond to you.

Avoid forcing close greetings. Your dog doesn't need to say hello to every dog they see!

Remember, the goal isn't to make your dog tolerate every situation up close. It's to help them feel safer and learn how to handle the world around them.

🐾 Training Tip Tuesday: Teach Your Dog to Settle!

Training isn't always about being active! Teaching your dog how to relax calmly is an important skill, too. 🐶

Try rewarding your dog when they settle quietly on their bed or mat. Start in a calm environment and gradually practice around more distractions as they improve.

Remember, calm behavior is a skill that takes practice! 💛

🐾 Training Tip Tuesday: Why Does My Dog “Know It” at Home but Not Outside?

Ever wonder why your dog can do a perfect “sit” in the living room but suddenly forgets everything when you step outside? 😅

Dogs don’t automatically generalize behaviors to new places. A cue they know at home may need to be practiced again in different environments, around new people, dogs, sounds, and distractions.

That’s why continuing training is so valuable! Even if your dog has completed puppy classes before, coming back to class after a break is a great way to refresh those skills and build on what they already know. You can also continue up the training ladder into more advanced classes as your dog’s skills and confidence grow.

Training isn’t just something you do once—it’s an ongoing process that helps keep those skills strong! 🐶🎓

🐾 Training Tip Tuesday: Potty Training! 🐾

Potty training takes patience, consistency, and a little bit of planning! Here are a few tips to help your pup succeed:

🏠 Take them out often: Puppies have small bladders, so frequent potty breaks are important—especially after waking up, eating, drinking, playing, and napping.

👀 Supervise closely: When your puppy is loose in the house, keep an eye on them. Sniffing, circling, or suddenly wandering off can be signs they need to go!

🎉 Reward immediately: When your pup potties outside, praise and reward them right away. Make it clear that pottying in the right spot is a BIG deal!

⏰ Keep a routine: Consistent meal, play, and potty schedules can help your puppy learn what to expect.

🚫 Skip the punishment: Accidents are part of the learning process. Scolding after the fact won't teach your puppy where they should go. Clean it up thoroughly and focus on preventing the next accident.

Remember, every puppy learns at their own pace. Consistency is key! 💕
