What is “proofing” a skill for your dog?

Apollo has been working very hard on remaining on his station when asked. But I want this to be a skill that he can reliably perform in all sorts of settings!

So to help him get there, I’m going to stage some “random” occurrences to see what level of distraction he can handle, and where he may need help.

If I notice that he is repeatedly failing with the same type of distraction, I’m going to find a way to break that down into a smaller slice for him to understand.

For example, if I notice he has a hard time staying on his station when another trainer enters the room, I may do a few reps of him successfully staying there while watching another trainer do something boring in an entirely different area.

When proofing is done gradually and thoughtfully, your dog can really amaze you with the skills they can perform in a variety of environments!

Happy training! 🐾
