A message from our State Veterinarian, Dr. Ryan Wolker:
As of June 3rd, 2026 the Arizona Department of Agriculture is aware of the official confirmation of New World screwworm in Zavala County, Texas.
While this is an important development, we want to stress that producers, ranchers and animal owners in Arizona should remain alert, not alarmed. At this time, confirmed cases remain more than 600 miles from Arizona.
Arizona’s surveillance efforts have been ongoing since fly trapping began in August 2025. To date, 73 rounds of surveillance and 927 qualifying samples have been submitted from Arizona traps to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory, and no New World screwworm flies have been detected in Arizona.
It is also important to understand that New World screwworm is not a viral disease and is not contagious or infectious. It is an ectoparasite, meaning it is a pest that can infest wounds in warm-blooded animals.
The Department continues to closely monitor the situation in Texas and the surrounding Mexican states and remains engaged with federal, state, tribal and industry partners on preparedness efforts. If additional mitigation is needed, the Department will follow federal guidance and issue additional direction as appropriate.
