Vet assistants are our vets’ and vet techs’ right hands at all times. Under veterinary supervision, they’re the ones who set up for surgeries and dental scalings, prepare vaccinations and injectables, run samples and labwork, administer certain medications, monitor patients, take health histories from pet parents, keep the clinic spic-and-span, run to the front to help with reception needs, ensure all bedding and linens are clean and sanitized, prepare surgical tools … truly, we’re going to run out of space before we finish listing out all the responsibilities of our vet assistants!

Our vet assistant group is comprised of certified vet assistants Hollie, Kaydence, and Carson; vet assistants Elvie, Lexi, Brittany, Kira, and Kaleigh; and student vet assistants Trey and Alexis. They are AWESOME, and we appreciate everything they do for Comer Vet and our patients.

🎉 It’s Vet Tech Week and Staff Appreciation Week here at Comer Vet, and boy, do we have so many people to celebrate! We hope you’ll pop in each day to see our themed dress-ups and staff spotlights. And, if you happen to be visiting Comer Vet, please be sure to tell our whole staff how much they mean to you!

We are so lucky this year to be honoring our 2️⃣ vet techs, Jessica and Erin! Like veterinarians, vet techs must undergo specific education and licensing requirements in order to practice. The state board decides in what capacity vet techs are able to practice with and without direct veterinary supervision. For example, in 2026, vet techs were permitted to administer 💉rabies vaccines, which was a HUGE deal during our recent Low-Cost Rabies Clinic. Our vet techs are incredibly skilled not only in the technical and scientific aspects of working with animals, but in assisting with patient care and pet parent communication. They are wonderful role models to our vet assistants and student vet assistants, and more than that, Jess and Erin add so much personality to our clinic.

Jessica’s loyalty and ability to tell it like it is — with a side of sass! — gets us going without fail, and it’s because of her leadership that so much runs so smoothly within Comer Vet, since she is also our practice manager. Erin first visited us as a vet tech extern herself, and we knew from day one that she would make a great permanent member of the Comer Crew. She is kind, joyful, creative, and loves addressing patient care with absolute accuracy!

The Comer Vet team talks a lot about f***l exams and the importance of having them done regularly to check for the presence of internal parasites, but monitoring the appearance of your pet’s p**p can also help keep an eye on their overall health. Abnormal color, shape, coating, or consistency could indicate a wide range of potentials that might be worth a phone call or a sick visit to Comer Vet. Addressing them as soon as you notice something off could prevent an emergency situation in the future, so swipe through to educate yourself on the proper appearance of p**p!
