Does your pet have an upcoming surgery scheduled, like a spay or neuter appointment? If so, you may want to chat with your vet about preanesthetic 🩸 bloodwork!
This precautionary tool helps the Comer Vet team ensure it’s safe for your pet to be “put under” for their procedure. It checks for:
🩸 A complete blood count, which may indicate if your pet has underlying disease that could affect how it responds to surgery and/or anesthesia. This includes anemia, inflammation, infection, immunodeficiency, risk of excessive blood loss due to clotting factors, and even cancer.
🩸 Serum biochemistry, which looks at liver, kidney, glucose, proteins, and electrolytes found in the blood. Abnormal levels can indicate slow healing, dehydration, poor organ function, or diabetes.
Not all abnormalities mean your pet can’t go through with surgery! Sometimes these can be corrected quickly, such as by administering fluids. But if values give your vet pause, they might recommend further diagnostic testing before putting your pet at potential risk by anesthetizing it.
