The end of an era.
The sire of our first ever litter, and the only sire to produce all of our litters until ~2023; to know him was to love him. A successful waterfowl retriever until he found his way to us, Scout was a proven stud/sporting dog, and a trailblazer of his type in the Southeast. Arguably, Scout transfigured the companion sporting dog industry, improving lines early in his years & encouraging many companion dog breeders in our region to pursue OFA Health Testing in their own programs.
Scout was a fierce protector whom loved unconditionally and worked passionately towards any goal. His devotion to me and his pack had no boundaries, and he served us fervently until he took his final breath. He was possessive, predictable, reliable, unwavering, and the most loyal friend I ever had.
Scout’s heart & drive were so intense that he was nearly unbearable at times. He wore many hats, including stud dog, working dog, protector, and therapist. We spent many days, nights, road trips, trail rides, and countless hours of fun together. We laughed and cried together. We argued & fought each other. We grew up together & I now have to learn adult life without him in it. He was quick to inform me of my shortcomings and I could always count on him to keep me humble.
He moved with me a handful of times in our younger years & remained a steadfast cheerleader during times of hardship & grief. I could always look back & find him in my corner.
Scout’s puppies are coast to coast, spread over 40 states in the USA. He was a mentor to me, and helped me to also mentor many other breeders who sought to improve their lines & programs. Scout was a superb teacher, and many K9’s over the years benefited from his ‘boot camp’. His desire to improve made him a valuable instructor & he could whoop any dog of any breed into shape.
Though he is no longer here in the physical world with us, he is survived by his best daughters & that is more than I could ever ask for. Baylor, Greta, & Malibu will continue his legacy & their presence will comfort all of us in the coming days.
Thank you, Scout, for your years of dedication to my family & I. You were my biggest fan. May you finally rest peacefully.
Love, Giles.
