Foothills Humane Society (FHS) is a private non-profit, 501c3 animal welfare organization located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Polk County, North Carolina. Eleven acres was generously donated to Foothills in the 1980’s and the facility we currently use today was built in 1989. Thanks to the support of our community, Foothills now employs a dedicated staff to manage the facility

and its residents. The Board of Directors voted to become a no-kill shelter in 2010. In addition to our successful adoptions and rescue programs, we offer many volunteer opportunities, public training classes, training and behavior assistance for our shelter dogs and boast an average 94% live-release rate, meaning that approximately 97% of our animals are adopted into loving homes or transferred to reputable rescue organizations.

A very special thank you to ScottLynn. 💙

For her birthday, ScottLynn raised money in memory of her friend Ellis Miller and donated it to help support the Ellis Miller Puppy Playground fund at Foothills Humane Society.

Ellis was a cherished FHS volunteer who shared her love, compassion, and time with the animals in our care. In Ellis’ memory, we are working to create something that reflects the joy she brought to our shelter — a puppy playground filled with love, play, and happy moments for the animals who need us.

ScottLynn, thank you for helping carry Ellis’ legacy forward in such a meaningful way. We are so grateful. 🐾

This is a long one, but please hear us out. 💙

It’s raining kittens and puppies, and we need fosters — big time.

Fosters are what help keep things moving at the shelter — and they’re so good for the animals, too. A foster home gives them a quieter, more comfortable place to grow, decompress, heal, and get ready for adoption while freeing up space for the next animal who needs us.

And fostering does **not** have to be a long-term commitment. Even a short stay can make a huge difference.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, this is your sign. We provide the supplies, guidance, and support — you provide the safe space and love.

Please consider opening your home as a foster. The animals need us, and we need you. 🐾
