Until this last week I was under the impression that theileria would not kill baby calves but I just had an 11-day-old calf covered in what looked like seed ticks dead from theileria. Usually I wait till at least 2 weeks of age to put a pour on on baby calves to kill lice ticks and flies but with this revelation I'm using cydectin pour on baby calves to keep them alive.

We do have a dolly to move the Lewis oilers to different locations if picking up with a tractor and moving it isn't convenient. $25 rental fee and you can drive it down the road at highway speed. Just have to remove the mineral feeder first. Easy to use.

Through ASC the LIP program will pay on extreme heat death loss if normal mortality is reached for the year. 5% death loss is expected for calves under 300 lbs. Herd inventory at the time of loss is necessary to determine if the 5% is met. In other words, if only calving in summer/fall and you loose 3 out of 4 of your first born calves, you qualify. Dated pictures are needed as well as good daily herd inventory records. The losses no longer have be to be turned in within 30 days. Get the ASC office informed before the end of the year.

Theileria is here and rampant. I have posted 4 cows in the last 2 weeks for 4 different owners. All of which are showing signs of Anaplaz or Theileria. There is no treatment for Theileria. Prevention is tick control. Theileria is now being spread by multiple species of ticks. I recommend if no tick tx has been done in 2 weeks, then reapply soon. Avermectin type pour-ons are a good consideration for a 45-day tick control. Cydectin is the best one.
I have been asked and no, I have not had any cases with owners using cattle oilers.
There are LIP payments on these animals once normal mortality is reached. Pictures, vet statement, lab confirmation spleen test, and head count on the property is needed.

Tick season is upon us and a new tick disease called theileria is encroaching into our area. There is no treatment for the infection so prevention of spread of ticks is our best solution. Cattle may develop natural herd immunity eventually. I would rather prevent the spread of ticks and the infections like anaplaz and theileria that affect our livestock by causing unthriftiness, abortion, or death. Some herds have lost up to 30% in a 2 week period. Utilizing the anaplaz vaccine, pour-ons, fly tags and the Coal Valley mineral that contains garlique (to ward insects) and CTC ( to prevent anaplaz). I am now offering Lewis Oilers. Cattle are attracted to the oilers for the mineral and a place to scratch. Motion activated pumps apply product on the slanted rubber and the hanging drape. This allows for more consistent application versus the continual drip applicators. The reservoir can be fully filled for season long use or partially filled to allow alternating insecticides to prevent resistant flies.
