It’s been a busy week, all total with the shelters and rescues we fixed 43 dogs and 74 cats that’s 117 animals spayed/castrated just this week. It’s not just me I have great teams at each location that help make this work.

Happy Veterinary Appreciation Day Dr. Mindy Mayfield Davis! She hit a new personal record of 72 surgeries performed in one day yesterday. Her dedication to her clients and rescues she works with daily is beyond appreciated by many. We all want to say thank you and how much we appreciate all the things you do!

Meet Rumi,
This sweet girl came into rescue at SEK Animal Advocates at 10 weeks old. She was unable to stand on her hind legs. She came from a breeder who had taken her to a veterinarian but she was not diagnosed properly and they said she would either grow out of it or put her down. Rumi actually had swimmers syndrome, a defect in the pups tendons and muscles which causes the legs to splay outwards. Early intervention with appropriate bedding and hobbling often helps correct this condition and pups go on to live normal lives. Unfortunately for Rumi, her diagnosis came too late to completely correct the problem. We did manage to get Rumi up on her hind legs and she can now run and play with just a little hitch in her get along. Thanks to SEK Animal Advocates commitment and local donations Rumi is living her best life and doesn’t let anything slow her down.

Meet Coonie,
This little kitten was attacked by a raccoon (hence the name). She was brought to MAA and Marie Wallace took her in. Marie initially didn’t have much hope for Coonie but she cleaned her wounds, gave antibiotics and supportive care. When I saw Coonie she was still struggling but showing her desire to survive. I stitched her wounds and gave more medications. One of the biggest struggles was Coonies lack of appetite, luckily there was another kitten at MAA that had no problem eating, we placed him with Coonie and within an hour she began to eat. It’s been three weeks now and Coonie is beginning to thrive, her wounds are healed, she has started to explore and is eating well. When you give locally these are the stories you make possible. These are the lives you help save.

I’m starting this page to bring awareness to what rescues encounter and the importance of giving locally. I will share stories from rescues and shelters in our area and highlight some animals looking for homes.
