We have an opportunity to help one of our regular boarders find a new home. Belle is a 5 year old spayed female White Shepherd, about 70 lbs, up to date on all her shots and perfectly healthy. Her home life has dramatically changed in the last year and her family needed to rehome her quickly, or feared they would be faced with putting her to sleep. We stepped in and have taken ownership of her because we could not bear to see her euthanized, and we understand it may take some time to find the right fit.

Belle is well behaved, crate trained, and house broken. She has been a regular 2x a week day boarder at CCC for 4+ years, so we know her well. She gets along well with other dogs but is an Alpha female, so she would need a canine companion who would respect her space. She does have a strong protective instinct, so she needs an experienced handler who can keep that in check, or someone who is willing to continue working with a professional trainer to ensure a smooth transition to a new environment. A home with older children would be fine, but no infants or toddlers. We are not sure about cats, but she does not have a strong prey drive and pays little attention to other dogs in a group environment.

While the City of Columbiana and City of Chelsea, Alabama have both already had their 4th of July Celebrations, there are still other community sponsored events to celebrate America's 250th Birthday. Please consider your neighbors, pets and livestock before using personal fireworks around them, and plan to attend one of these events instead. We especially appreciate our surrounding neighbors being mindful of the dog boarding kennel and our horses during any holiday that involved fireworks. It is PEAK SNAKE SEASON in Alabama and we've gotten 2 reports from clients whose dogs have been bitten by venomous snakes while on a hike. Sadly, one beloved pet did not survive, which prompted us to share this information with you in an effort to keep your family safe.

Alabama's six venomous snakes are copperheads, coral snakes, water moccasins/cottonmouths, pigmy rattlesnakes, timber rattlesnakes and eastern diamondback rattlesnakes. From May - July, snakes are heavily hunting and breeding. During the hottest days, they are most active early mornings and late afternoons/evenings to avoid the intense daytime heat.

Snake identification can be tricky, but as a general rule, if a snake has an elliptical – vertical slit – pupil, it’s venomous. If it has a round pupil, it isn’t, except for coral snakes, which shares the round pupils of nonvenomous snakes. Finding a coral snake is a once or twice-in-a-lifetime event. More common are Water Moccasins, which are going to be in or near bodies of water – swamps, ponds, wooded streams. But out on the trail the most common venomous snakes will be Copperheads and Timber Rattlesnakes.

If bitten, attempt to snap a photo of the snake, but time is of the essence. Venomous bites will be accompanied by intense pain and swelling, and you should seek medical attention immediately. If your regular vet does not stock antivenom, you will need to go to an emergency animal hospital.
