Tinsel, Tears and Tangled Lights: Grieving through the Holidays
The holidays have a way of amplifying everythingājoy, love, connection, but also loss, longing, and grief. For those of us navigating life without loved ones, this season can feel like walking through a maze of bittersweet memories and raw emotions.
Life is messy. Grief is messy. And somehow, the holidays make that mess harder to tidy away. The festive expectations clash with the reality of loss, creating a kind of emotional chaos thatās impossible to escape.
When I lost my parents, I didnāt realize how profoundly the holidays would shift. Traditions once filled with laughter and comfort now feel like fragile remnants of a life I canāt fully reclaim. At times, Iāve tried to push through, making everything āperfect,ā only to feel more disconnected. Other times, Iāve retreated, overwhelmed by the thought of pretending everything is okay.
But hereās what Iāve learned: the mess doesnāt need to be hidden or fixed. The beauty of lifeāand griefāis that itās not supposed to be neat. Itās in the brokenness that we find honesty, connection, and even healing.
This year, Iām letting the mess of grief coexist with the spirit of the season. Iām leaning into what feels rightāwhether itās allowing tears to fall during a cherished holiday movie, lighting a candle for my parents during dinner, or skipping traditions that no longer feel comforting.
Iāve also learned to let others in. Grief can feel isolating, but sharing those messy, complicated emotions with someone who understandsāeven if theyāre just sitting beside you in quiet supportācan lighten the load.
So, if youāre carrying loss this season, give yourself permission to do the holidays your way. Let the mess remind you that love, even when it feels broken, is still love. The ones weāve lost are still with us, not in perfectly wrapped memories but in the beautiful, imperfect ways they shaped who we are. And sometimes, thatās exactly what we need.
