Who's nature's clean-up crew? 🦅

International Vulture Awareness Day — the first Saturday of September — shines a spotlight on this often-misunderstood bird. Many of their unique features allow them to scavenge remains easily and without becoming sick. Because of this, vultures can reduce disease transmission and play an important role in the ecosystem!

Here at Riverbanks, our bird team cares for cinereous vultures Walter and Meera and king vultures Venus and Lilith. Both species have been declining in numbers due to factors like deforestation, habitat loss, and human interference. It's more important than ever to support measures that protect wildlife and wild places!

💦 Changes ahead for the Splash Zones! 💦

Through Monday, September 7th (Labor Day), the AFLAC Splash Zone and Li'l Sprouts Splash Zone will operate as normal.

🚨 New for 2026! 🚨 After September 7th, AFLAC Splash Zone and Li’l Sprouts will be open Saturdays and Sundays. The final day of the season will be Sunday, September 27. After this, both splashpads will be closed until next spring.

Looking for fun weekend plans for a good cause? 🦏

Join the Riverbanks chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) next week on Saturday, August 29th at Craft Axe Throwing in Columbia for Axe Throws for Rhinos!

Next Saturday, proceeds all day from both the Downtown Columbia and Lexington Craft Axe locations will directly benefit rhino conservation. From 6:00-8:00PM at the Downtown location, AAZK will be having a silent auction and raffle. Proceeds from that fundraiser will go directly to rhino conservation!

No need to be an axe-pert... Just have fun knowing you're benefitting rhino conservation around the world! 🦏
