It is truly an incredible feeling to work with a dog at this level!
One of the most jaw dropping things a Labrador can do looks almost impossible the first time you see it. 🎯 In a retriever field trial, a dog is sent out to fetch a bird it never saw fall, running hundreds of yards across open ground, guided only by the handler's whistle and hand signals.
This is called a blind retrieve, and it takes years to build. The dog has to trust the handler completely, taking a line on command, stopping on a single whistle, then adjusting left or right with nothing but a raised arm to go on. It is teamwork at a distance, and it reveals just how much a Lab can hold in its head at once.
Organized retriever trials have been running since the 1930s, and they helped shape the driven, athletic field type Labs we see today. Watching one work is a reminder that underneath the family goofball is a genuine canine athlete with a serious job description.
There is something moving about that level of trust stretched across an entire field. 🖤
