One of the hardest parts of toxic relationships is that they rarely lower our standards overnight.

It usually happens slowly.

Through criticism.
Through inconsistency.
Through emotional manipulation.
Through repeatedly being made to feel “too sensitive,” “too emotional,” or “too much.”

Over time, many people begin adjusting to behavior they once would have recognized as unhealthy.

They start:
• apologizing for having needs
• walking on eggshells
• accepting less emotional safety
• doubting their own intuition
• feeling grateful for bare minimum effort

This is one reason healing after emotional abuse can feel so confusing.

Many survivors are not “choosing less” because they lack strength. Often, their nervous system has adapted to chronic stress, unpredictability, invalidation, or trauma bonding.

Healing often involves rebuilding:
✨ self-trust
✨ boundaries
✨ emotional safety
✨ self-worth
✨ the belief that healthy love should not require abandoning yourself
