🐾 IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE WEDGEWOOD PHARMACY MEDICATION RECALL 🐾
By now, some of you may have heard about the recent medication recall involving Wedgewood Pharmacy. We have already started receiving calls from understandably concerned pet owners, and we wanted to take a moment to address the situation.
First and foremost, we understand your concerns. We know how much you love your pets, and the last thing anyone wants to hear is that a medication they’ve been giving their pet may be part of a recall.
We also want to be completely transparent about where things currently stand on our end.
Like many veterinary hospitals, we rely on outside compounding pharmacies to prepare certain medications specifically for our patients. We trust these pharmacies to provide medications that are accurately compounded and meet appropriate quality and safety standards.
Unfortunately, we are learning about this recall and trying to navigate it right alongside you.
Despite reaching out to Wedgewood directly, we have not yet received a formal recall notification or the detailed instructions needed to fully determine the impact on our patients.
And quite frankly, that’s frustrating.
We care deeply about the animals we treat, and it’s incredibly upsetting to be in a position where our clients are looking to us for answers that we’re still trying to obtain ourselves.
We want to make one thing very clear: Animal Mansion had no prior knowledge of the concerns that led to this recall. We would never knowingly dispense a medication that we believed could put one of our patients at risk.
It’s also important to understand that this recall is NOT limited to medications purchased directly from our hospital.
Our VetCove online pharmacy works with multiple compounding pharmacies, including Wedgewood Pharmacy and Mixlab. This particular recall involves certain medications compounded by Wedgewood, not those compounded by Mixlab.
In fact, many of the calls we’ve received so far have involved prescriptions ordered through our online pharmacy rather than medications purchased directly from Animal Mansion.
Just because your pet receives a compounded medication, or because you ordered it through VetCove, does NOT automatically mean your medication is affected.
We encourage clients to check their prescription labels to identify which pharmacy compounded their medication. If it was Wedgewood, please review the official recall information to determine whether your specific medication and lot number are included.
Not all Wedgewood medications are affected by this recall, either.
Please also understand that when medications are compounded and shipped directly to clients by an outside pharmacy, we may not have access to the individual lot numbers on the bottles you received. This is why checking your medication’s label is so important.
We know some of you are worried about medications your pets have already received, whether additional testing may be necessary, or what this means for their ongoing treatment. Those are completely reasonable concerns, and we are taking them seriously.
However, being included in a recall does not automatically mean a medication was incorrectly compounded or that your pet has been harmed. Each situation needs to be evaluated individually.
If you believe your pet’s medication may be affected by this recall, please contact our hospital as soon as possible so we can help determine the safest next steps.
PLEASE DO NOT make changes to your pet’s medication regimen without first speaking with a veterinarian.
Certain medications, particularly those used to manage heart conditions, seizures, behavioral disorders, and other chronic illnesses, should not be discontinued abruptly without veterinary guidance. Suddenly stopping these medications can potentially cause serious complications.
At the same time, continuing to administer a recalled medication may also carry risks. This is why it is so important that we evaluate each situation individually and determine whether an alternative medication, additional monitoring, or a change in treatment is necessary.
If your pet’s medication is confirmed to be affected, please contact us before the next scheduled dose whenever possible so we can discuss a safe treatment plan. If our hospital is closed and your pet needs medication before we reopen, please contact an emergency veterinarian for guidance.
If your pet is experiencing concerning symptoms, please seek veterinary attention immediately.
We are continuing to work on obtaining answers and will share additional information as it becomes available.
We ask for your patience and understanding as we work through this. Our team is here because we genuinely love animals and care about the families who trust us with them. We are doing everything we can to navigate a situation we did not create, with information we are still working to obtain.
Your pets’ health and safety have always been, and will continue to be, our priority. ❤️
